Per ESPN: “The Yankees went 5-8 against the Blue Jays in the regular season and just 1-6 in Toronto. The head-to-head series proved significant when both clubs finished tied atop the AL East with 94 wins, and the Blue Jays won the division because of the season-series tiebreaker.” This is going to be an interesting series.

Skubal is 3-2 in five career starts vs. Seattle, with both of those losses having come this season. So he’s due for a rebound… 🤞

I feel like I’m playing with House money, but I would still really like to win this series. If Skubal can win two games and Mize can win one then we’ve got it. But the Tigers have to score runs. If they’ll only score a couple runs each game, I don’t see how this can turn out well.

This will be the first Mariners game I will have watched in several years because I am blacked out because I reside in “Mariners country”and I’m not interested in having a cable subscription. Granted I would never watch them just for the sake of it, but when the Tigers play them I can’t see the game on TV.

Saturday and Sunday weather for Seattle looks like moderate fall weather so the roof should be open.

If anyone other than the Tigers were playing against the Mariners in this series, I would begrudgingly root for the Mariners. It’s a nice ballpark. I saw the Tigers play there when Carlos Guillén was still on the team so it had to be 2011 or before. Strolling along the waterfront area before the game almost 2/3 of everybody was wearing Tigers gear. The Tigers lost 3-1. The roof was open and it was a really great atmosphere.

This made me think of the Seattle Pilots and their ill-fated 1969 season that led to them moving to Milwaukee in 1970 and becoming the Brewers. Although I want the Tigers to win, there would be a delicious irony in Milwaukee and Seattle facing each other in the World Series. This is not the dream scenario for the oligarchs. They would just as soon have the Yankees face the Dodgers or maybe the Cubs every year and that would be the World Series no matter what.

I honestly don’t want to see DD win another World Series that he couldn’t deliver with our club. That 2018 Red Sox team that had our players on it won the whole thing. It’s galling. I’m definitely pulling for the Dodgers to beat the Phillies.

I remember in the early 60s listening to Ernie announcing from LA late at night on my transistor radio and how he loved pronouncing the the name of the Angels pitcher Bo Belinsky and I marveled at the fact there was another team out there other than the Giants and Dodgers. At the time I wasn’t aware there was an American League team out there.

I do wish ill for the Phillies though. Almost enough to root for the Dodgers, but I wish both teams could lose.

HA! well, I guess it’s 5:30 in the morning and I’m delusional. I’m celebrating prematurely after four hours sleep. I guess I’m guilty of wish fulfillment.

I’m glad the Mets didn’t make it anywhere. The Mets went 38-55 from June 13 onward, and finished 7-14 in their final 21 games. $765 million to Soto and and barely a .500 team. Neither did the Phillies. No Houston no Rangers. My cup runneth over. I guess dancing on the graves of other teams and their fan bases is a bad thing to do but the fact that my team is moving on does bring me joy, even a kind of malevolent joy.

I didn’t feel all that bad for the fans. I don’t dislike them personally, but I didn’t feel all that bad for the fans. I found their joy annoying, which may not reflect well upon me. But I actually felt bad for the Cleveland players who’ve been flying so high they should all have nosebleeds. They played magic baseball for the last month of the season and they overcame a lot of adversity. But it’s a zero sum game. I’m much happier my team won than their’s did. I am so relieved. They finally put together a good game.

I think this is correct.

Granted, but compared to some clubs that’s a small sample.

After it became available on mlb.tv, I revisited the Tigers seventh inning and the Guardians ninth and those guys in the Cleveland dugout were a sad looking crew. As were their fans. I’m amazed that for the deciding game of this series Cleveland still couldn’t get a sell out. A part of me still feels like I’m dreaming. Short of a collapse it looks like the Yankees are cruising to win.

I’m toying with watching the Yankees - Red Sox elimination game, but I don’t know if I can weather fawning celebration of these two teams on ESPN.

Looks like Skubal won’t be able to pitch against Seattle until game three in Detroit. It’ll be like his last time, pitching on the sixth day. Too bad he’s not like Mickey Lolich who pitched game 5 in Detroit in the ‘68 series and on the third day game 7 in St. Louis.

I feel like a lot of the seeming toxins that accumulated in me towards the end of the season have been flushed out. I’m re-achieving an equanimity that’s been lacking and it’s a relief. Honestly, there’s been times where I felt like there was broken glass in my bloodstream. I obviously take this stuff too seriously.

Tigers presser on now.

A lot of respect for Cleveland and the moxie it took to come back from the scandal of two pitchers taken from them for gambling, and being so far back, it was the good feeling story of 2025 just as the Tigers were last year. But their loss is our gain, and I’m not shedding too many tears for them.
