the obsession with "what the gambling companies" think is weird.  i was told that this would never happen because of the "gambling companies" and now it has.  so....

They are business partners.  Managers have to submit their lineups to them before the media so they can set the lines before the general public.  That is an arrangement that goes beyond advertising. MLB is actively helping them run their business.  I don’t think it’s a leap to think it those companies went to MLB and said “bets during the game are down… make it 20 or 22 seconds” that MLB would do it. Why wouldn’t they?

Big  corporations heavily influence everything that is done in sports, so I would think that gambling companies that partner with baseball would have a lot infulence.   I would BET that they ran this by them before they made the decision.

Gambling in sports is no joke and I don't think anything good will come out of it.  They have most likely already contributed to serious addiction problems.

My interest in sports has been waning for awhile now,  mostly because of some of the awful people who are part of it and the over emphasis of legal gambling too.  I still follow the local teams, but honestly, I hardly know any NHL players outside of Detroit anymore.   I hate the NBA and college basketball because of all the prima donnas.  Juwan Howard should have been fired.  He threw a punch at someone as a Head Coach.  So much for that higher standard, Michigan.    College football is less appealing now, I mean I am a Michigan fan, but I really can't stand Jim Harbaugh, he's the biggest phony in sports since Rick Pitino  (I know, they're all phonies).   I will always follow baseball because it's like a religion, in a way, and it's what I have always done, but I found last year that in July when I discontinued my MLB TV subscription, I really didn't miss it that much.  Having a horrible team was a big part of that.     Maybe part of it this Decade of Suck in Detroit.

I played along last year ($10 at a time), and I did really well  (because it was only $10 at a time and my future was never at stake),        I think the most I ever bet was $50 - on Tampa to beat KC in the Super Bowl, and I turned a $10 NFL playoff parlay into $160 thanks to the Cowboys and Packers choking),  The $10 bets on the over 5.5 goals in NHL games was easy money.  Probably won 6.5 out of every 10 times, but only $10 at a time. They wised up this season and you rarely see even a 6 these days.

Too many NFL games are coming down to some very very shady officiating,  officiating so bad that it lends credence to those who are saying it's all fixed.   I stopped playing along this year.  I was breaking even the first few weeks of the NFL season, but too many games came down to odd officiating that it just wasn't fun anymore.

You have thousands and thousands of guys betting their mortgage and bill money on heavy bets.   Something tragic is gonna happen and you can bet there is going to be a player scandal somewhere.

Greed ruins everything.  Always has, always will.

And I am so burned out on the ads for betting. Every one of the people in those ads just sounds like the "degenerate gambler".   They're worse than drug dealers.

then why did they do it if big gambling would supposedly be so against it?

hard core gamblers will gamble.  casual gamblers will gamble if theyre watching a game.  if the game is boring, they wont watch and wont gamble.

also, baseball has a vested interest in growing their audience.  3 30 games are a hindrance to that.  faster games will likely spur interest.

despite the sentiment around here, baseball has more interests than just those of fan duel.

I listened to a decent chunk of the game yesterday—it didn’t seem as though Dan and Jim were calling every pitch or sharing what the count was. I was distracted listening at times, so might have been me.  Anyone else notice this?

I’ll be honest.  I was just so happy to hear a ballgame that I didn’t pay much attention to the broadcast.  I don’t know if that makes much sense or not.

Didn't listen enough to notice, but in their defense they had a lot of offseason moves and new rules and getting to know players information to get out.  Announcers need a little Spring Training too.

I was the same way.   Wasn't sure I could get the game on 1270 online, so I got in my car and just drove around for an hour just to listen to the game.   It'll be on FM today and maybe some of the more interesting new players will be playing.    It's a nice day today so I will probably do the same for a little while.

1270 is literally called The Bet and the station is named after a casino betting sponsor.   It's overload and other than a Tigers or Wings game I wouldn't want to listen.

And just shaking off the rust of not calling a game for months.  And less time in between pitches to work with and discuss these items, too.  And with it being the first spring training game, there are players leavening and entering the game darn near every half inning.

They did have their first mystery player of the spring yesterday.  Some random Phillie with an unrostered uniform number and no name on the back of his jersey.  Nice to get that one out of the way early.

I didn’t say they were. I’m saying if they find out bets are down as a result then they might make a push to extend it.

My guess is it remains to be seen.  Theory doesn’t always match reality.  The books are probably going to lose some bets with the quicker pace.  However that part of revenue that flows into MLB’s bank account from betting is probably offset and then some by revenues from increased volume of eyeballs on TVs, ears tuned to radios, and butts in seats (and concession stands).  Surely that’s what MLB hopes.

Didn’t mean it as a criticism—just wondering if it’s the new broadcasting reality with the pitch clock.

Oh, I know.   I just think they have so much non on-the-field stuff to cover in these first few games, especially guys they've never talked about before.

The announcers should end up liking it. That's about 15-30min less material they need to be ready with for every game.

Did you find that you listened more closely than usual ?

LOL - I think something had gone wrong on my end - I got double feeds all the way through the game, and when I did listen I could pick up that the 2nd commercial was for Baltimore - so somehow my browser was playing one game stream but both commercial streams.
