kind of mirrors the Trevor Bauer situation - even if somehow not illegal, career significantly at risk

If true, it sounds more like the Felipe Vazquez case a few years ago. From being an all star to being in prison. Again, if it is true, Wander should also go to prison.

Ike Blessit tells a story about Billy Martin sending him to the minors or having him released, to the point where it was significant salary wise, not sure the specifics.

But his point was this.  Billy had a girl, 16 years old probably, definitely a high school girl, in his room at the Leland hotel in Detroit.  He wanted Ike to driver her home.  It was like 2 am.  She lived in West Bloomfield or something like that.  Ike's said no way was he, as a black man, driving a 16 year old white girl around Oakland county after 2 am to drop her off at her house.  Billy got mad and blackballed him.

Maybe Ike's lying or mixing up details, he was in part of a hard luck story about him and his hard times.  But it's believable.  Like Hollywood producers and power brokers and actresses and the casting couch, Weinstein, etc.  Maybe not every story is true but there's a lot of them that are.

Anna K turned 16 the day the Wings won the Cup in '97. Fedorov was 27.

I have nearly the same photo.  I wasn't there but a neighbor was and he had duplicates and gave me that one.  I'm not even sure we all knew who she was then.

When it came out not long after about her age everyone was like "Well, they're Russian so...."

Remember a few years ago when it was revealed that Pete Rose was in a sexual relationship with a 14 year old girl during the 1970s?

The case I remember the most was Luis Polonia in 1989.  He had sex with a 15 year old girl.  It turned out that the girl's mother had her made up to like an older women so that she could trap professional players.  He was able to continue with his career.

That kind of behavior was not quite as taboo in the 1970s or even 80s as it is today.  It was always wrong and generally frowned upon, but you can see movie references of men with underaged girls which was supposed to be funny back then, but is unacceptable today.

music.... Ted Nugent.  Chuck Berry.  Bob Seger even used a line in Let it Rock.

"Too damn cute to be a minute over 13".

American Beauty won an Oscar for Best Picture and a plot point was Spacey lusting after his HS neighbor.  It wasn't presented as creepily as it should have been at the time.

I'm sure hundreds, if not thousands of athletes  have found themselves caught up with an underage girl, knowingly or unknowingly. The difference between the 70s and today is social media.

It is obvious  Wander knew those photos of him and that girl were being taken. Did he know she was underage? We will see. But I don't know how any athletes could  or would put themselves in that situation.  Maybe it is. "It won't happen to me" attitude,  but your livelihood and freedom are at stake. Somehow, some way, you have to be sure they are of age.

The original line in Chuck Berry’s song was: “She's too cute to be a minute over seventeen”. So … what was Seger trying to tell us about himself?

But hey, like Tiger337 implied, it was the 70’s and things were different. It was very common to see children, particularly young girls, being quite sexualized in popular culture. Just as a top-of-mind example, consider the innuendos surrounding Tatum O’Neal’s character in Bad News Bears. Another example: pictures of a naked Brooke Shields as a child that were published in newsstand magazines!

I had wondered about this for a long time and couldn’t even reasonably hypothesize why that era, which I myself grew up in, sexualized children, who were my contemporaries, like no other time before or since. I saw the new Brooke Shields documentary a few months ago and they provided one possible answer that hadn’t occurred to me: in the face of “women’s lib”, during which an entire gender was finally standing up and asserting themselves like never before, the men of the era, who basically owned and ran popular culture vehicles like Hollywood and book and music publishing and the like, responded by turning away from the adult women of that time and started fetishizing the innocence of the young girls. That explanation makes a lot of sense to me.

there were a whole slew of them back in the day. Happy Birthday, Sweet 16...You're 16, You're Beautiful and You're Mine... Sweet Little 16...

And they played the grooves out of them on the radio..

Check out the lyrics to Seger’s Louise.

A sports case from the ‘80s, better known in Canada than the U.S., was Doug Gilmour. When he was playing for the St Louis Blues, he and his wife hired a 13 yr old babysitter to watch their young daughter. The mother of the babysitter found a diary in which the babysitter made several entries about having sex with Gilmour. When her mother confronted her, the babysitter “admitted” that she had a frequent sexual relationship with Gilmour. Truth? Fantasy? Legal case was brought and moved forward before being dropped for insufficient evidence. Gilmour was promptly traded and went on to a storied career with Calgary and Toronto and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011.

Not exactly a feel good story.

Heard one this morning: Benny Mardones - Into the Night

She's just 16 years old

Leave her alone they say...

oh wow....that was a high school song for us.  Became a running gag with his extended vocals at the end. High School humor.  You had to be there.
