Video games are not my thing, but studies have show that they do develop skills that can be useful in life. Travel sports are probably great for some kids too. I think for most youth, the pressure of obsessing over one sport is not the best experience especially if it's under the supervision of over ambitious adults. Playing a variety of different sports and other activities is probably a better experience for most. Sure, it doesn’t have to be sports, whatever you love and are passionate about. Go for it. Quote

We have friends that have a grandson that has played baseball on a travel team the past couple of years. They live in the Raleigh, NC area. They’ve done weekend tournaments in Atlanta, Charleston, SC to name just two. Their life is literally about baseball travel during the season. I don’t see how they do it. The costs for parents/grandparents is a lot! Travel, lodging, meals are just the beginning. These teams pay fees to enter these tournaments and the parents have to write that check as well. These teams pay fees to enter these tournaments and the parents have to write that check as well. It’s also a dark side because sometimes making a team is contingent upon going to X camp run by Y person and that camp costs a lot of money. a co worker would tell me stories of hockey tournaments. Kids all huddled in a few rooms playing video games. Parents huddled in other rooms getting drunk. Quote
Tenacious D Posted January 27, 2024 Posted January 27, 2024 I coached travel for my youngest son (only one season—the parents were miserable to deal with). Many years of traveling/tournaments for my oldest—it is a summer-long commitment. The teams typically only carry 12 players, because the coaches don’t want to deal with parents complaining about playing time for their son when they shelled out $2000 to be on the team, plus travel expenses and time commitment. As such, the coaches expect everyone attend every game (they need the pitchers/innings), and be flexible if they choose to add additional last minute tournaments at their discretion. Quote
casimir Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 Quote MILWAUKEE – Bob Uecker can still land a one-liner. Like this, on the eve of his 90th birthday: “I can’t believe I got to my batting average,” he said. In case you missed Ueck's birthday. 3 Quote

SoCalTiger Posted February 2, 2024 Posted February 2, 2024 Great trade for the O's. They had to get another solid starter for that team. Quote

By trading for him now, they will at least get a draft pick if he leaves. (He would obviously get a qualifying offer) 1 1 Quote

I saw that and personally from the Royals perspective I wasn't that big of fan of it due to all the opt outs. They basically gave him opts out on every one of his would be FA deals so KC is taking on all the risk now without being able to reap any possible rewards if in 5 years Witt is viewed as a top 5 player and viewed as a guy that could get 400 million on the open market. Without the opt outs they would be reaping some rewards by getting him at "only" some 35 million a year but with them he will just opt out or re work the contract where he is paid his worth if he ends up being a top tier superstar. OTOH if he completely flames out and never hits his full potential then KC is on the hook for nearly 300 million dolllars. 1 Quote

There will always be owners and officers of his ilk. The issue that concerns me is that nobody in the game opposes him. Manfred and all the remaining owners are blessing this move. It sucks for the game. Quote
