I believe it has to do with half the roster being pitchers. At one time, the typical roster had 15 hitters and 9 pitchers, so there was 2 extra bench spots which allowed for more platooning and mixing and matching without players playing out of position. The solution would be to expand rosters to 28 while keeing pitching staffs at a max of 13 And throw in the fact that of the 13 position players, 1 won't be seen using a fielding glove and 1 shouldn't attempt to. While expanding rosters might be preferable to some, that just isn't the rule right now. So the Tigers have to make decisions that affect offense/defense. Or maybe figure out a way to go with 12 pitchers and 14 position players. Or maybe figure out a way to employ more/better everyday baseball players that can hit, run the bases, and play defense The miscommunication play involved 4 players, but 1 is the everyday CF and 1 is the everyday SS. The guy that should take care of the OF and the guy that should take care of the IF. The CF had the easiest play, running in on the ball and it being within his range. Greene needs to call it, make the play, and be done with it. Maybe there's a bit of hesitancy because Baez is involved in the play, and the younger Greene feels the need to defer to the much more established Baez. No, don't worry about it. The dome ceiling can be challenging. The field turf looks awful. Make the decision to make the easiest baseball play available, do not risk giving the better team extra outs to play with. Quote
