Thank God no Michigan player got injured because of this. We've been told the past 2 weeks that sign stealing is a dangerous practice that jeopardizes the health and safety of football players and the health and safety of guys on the Spartans.

I'm glad it's an AP story, rather than Bacon or Webb. Surely not even ESPN can ignore and not pick it up.

I still go back to the whole sign stealing thing as a tempest in a teapot. Is there any team doesn't use multiple signals? I heard a coach call in on the radio talking about what a huge advantage it is for a DB to know run/pass before the snap, but if you signal a run and a pass in your multiple, how much help is it then? Not to mention you'd think any coach worth his salt would just send plays in on player rotation if he suspected the D had his calls. Teams played football successfully for decades before play signing became a thing.

It's not justification of breaking the rules but the way all these dummies are talking about this doesn't say much for the brains of the average sports commentator.

If this whole thing has shown nothing, it's how dumb the NCAA is for not permitting two-way communication between a coaching staff and players on offense and defense.

They allow it in baseball between coach and catcher, but not in a louder, more open environment?

"Gee coach Manly, it sure seems like those evil guys in blue on the other side have our signs! Whatever can we do?"

"Well Rusty, I guess we'll just have to lose this game and then throw ourselves on the goodness of the B1G enforcement office because in all my years of coaching I can't think of single thing we can do now!"

"What a pickle were in!"

Meanwhile, they were sharing Michigan's signs with all of Michigan's opponents.  And potentially having PI firms conduct CNE into Michigan's networks to gather data.

that should all be common knowledge to every coach in college football.  and will hopefully quiet the ryan walters' of the world crying about how horrible the IDEA of sign stealing is.  we all know - well, those of us who arent here simply to troll michigan fans- that every school steals signs.

the other "rumors" of people sharing film of michigan practices is more damning and potentially more troublesome for the accused, but that's only an internet allegation and no one from the AP or unaffiliated with michigan press member has put a name to it.  the rumors continue but as of now theyre still just rumors.

and the idea that others simply stole signs - while putting the moralizing BS of the big ten coaches to rest - doesnt help michigan with the sanctions.  the sanctions arent for stealing signs, that's legal; rather, the allegations are for having someone in person steal them.  so michigan will get hit for that and so will harbaugh.

seems like a distinction without a difference, but it is the rule.

Depends on how the shared signs data was sourced. If, say, an Illinois low level staffer or fan, with Illinois having just played Michigan, sent a low level staffer of another team info about Michigan’s signs, that info almost certainly would have been sourced in-person. Stalions only had friends go watch games. If other teams effectively had personnel from other teams do the in-person scouting, that’s arguably worse. Maybe they didn’t use electronic means. Or less likely, maybe they didn’t do in-person scouting, maybe their equal at another school said “in advance of our game against Michigan, we pored over publicly available game tape and were able to figure out enough about Michigan’s signs, and we can save you the trouble of having to do so before you play them next week”

Will be interesting if Blake Corum sues Ryan Walters for injuring him in the Illinois game last year as part of collusion with the other B1G coaches he was in consortium with.   Ryan Walters has been one of the loudest complainers.  Every accusation is a confession.

Sam Webb on his show with Al Borges is basically saying that if the B1G is a business partnership and if your business partners try to screw you, you should leave the partnership.
