The: "Can we not do this anymore?" 2024 MLB Draft

Another week and another drop of 2 mocks. An interesting tidbit from Law is there are an assumed 11 players that are a tier above the others we pick 11th so I guess that's good 🤷‍♂️ also "I’ve had national cross-checkers, scouting directors, and even a GM comment to me on what a mess the draft is after the first echelon of players is off the board."

Pipeline: Yesavage
Athletic: Rainer

11. Detroit Tigers: Bryce Rainer, SS, Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, Calif.)

There’s a dashed line of sorts between the top-11 players in the class and everyone else, not a huge dropoff but enough that I’m assuming the Tigers will just take whichever guy is left in that group rather than doing a deal with someone else.

Ive seen some mocks that have us taking college OF Honeycutt from NC.  He's got a nice collection of tools including 60 power and speed...but I don't think a 28% k rate will fly with the Tigers current mgmnt.

Rainer would be nice if he's still there.

But also...

Someone in the top 10 will reach for a guy who isn't.

No guarantees, but it always seems to happen.

And if it does, we'll have a choice between the 11th guy and maybe 1 or 2 others in the top-11 where there's that "huge" drop off after the 11 top guys. I'm not certain which 2 (or 3) guys I want to be available at 11 if that were to happen...

I like the idea of drafting up the middle if the choices aren't too much of a reach.  SS, CF, SP, C.

I prefer Griffin here and it seems Lomavita does not fit the control-the-zone narrative so I would be surprised with him as the pick.

11. Detroit Tigers

Caleb Lomavita, C, Cal

Lomavita has a lot of late helium into this area and probably goes somewhere between Nos. 8-17. He has plus tools, but his weakness is his chase rate, something that teams have had some success improving in pro ball. Cam Caminiti is a real factor here, as is Trey Yesavage (who recently suffered a partially collapsed lung that teams are still learning about). I also can't rule out Griffin, as Detroit isn't scared to take a prep player early. Detroit figures to have a number of solid options and could go with any of the four major player categories.

Seems like bad news if Yesavage is dropping. There were 11 clear top picks. If Griffin does fall out of the top ten, I'd be ok with that.

BA has us taking Yesavage in their latest mock.

11. Tigers — Trey Yesavage, RHP, ECU

Injury was about the only thing that could slow Yesavage down this season. He dealt with a punctured lung that kept him off the mound in the ACC tournament and caused a bit of a scare, though it sounds like he should be able to pitch in this weekend’s Greenville regional, where a matchup with Chase Burns is possible. Yesavage has pitched his way into the consensus No. 3 pitcher slot in this class. I’ve yet to hear anyone say that this injury has removed that status. This is about the range where high school pitchers could seem like real options.

Pipeline has us taking Caminiti

11. Tigers: Cam Caminiti, LHP, Saguaro HS, Ariz. (No. 17)
As of right now, this seems to be the ceiling for the young lefty in Arizona who got the most votes in our executive survey as the best prep pitcher in the class.

I dont see Harris drafting a prep pitcher in first round but I could be wrong

So from my understanding, it isn't Harris really who makes all of those decisions, I am sure he has final say/is consulted but I am guessing he relies on his scouts and mainly his Director of Amateur Scouting Mark Conner to make those decisions and I know Rob Meltzer was pretty influential in the past but he has been promoted so not sure there. That being said Conner comes from San Diego and they have never been shy about selecting prep pitchers so I wouldn't be super shocked by it but we know they can mold pitchers pretty well and bring them up so generally I would prefer a bat of some sort but that's just my preference.

what about Cam Smith 3B out of FSU? i'd like to see a catcher or a SS, I feel like they can develope Pitchers out of the later rounds

If we are talking FSU guys I wouldn't be surprised to see James Tibbs getting some thought here. He has more home runs than strikeouts this year and has had some helium lately so he fits the expected mold but he is limited to LF or possibly 1B so that is a drawback for a "complete player".

Someone in the top ten will blink and a good hitter will drop to the Tigers.

I am sure you are right, someone will get cute with signing under-slot and floating someone to a later round. Miss when the draft was early June vs July so you could watch some of the college players who had been drafted in the CWS etc.

Update Pipeline Mock has us taking Griffin which I would be thrilled with.

https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-pipeline-2024-mock-draft-june-6?t=mlb-draft-coverage

I won't post it here because I have heard some accusations about him and plagiarism but one of the more prominent draft guys did a podcast with Jim Callis around the Tigers and expectations around 11 and I will save you all from having to listen to it and let you know what kind of came out of it. Depending on how the board falls do not be surprised if Cam Caminiti gets picked by us, Mark Conner and Rob Meltzer have been seen at many of his games along with a handful of cross-checkers so there is certainly smoke there, I doubt it would happen but I would love to float him to 49 if we can sign someone else below slot at 11. They have also seemed pretty interested in Chase Harlan out of Pennslyvania.

Griffin would be the best case scenario.

Another week another pipeline mock. We are about one month out.

https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-pipeline-2024-mock-draft-june-13?t=mlb-pipeline-coverage

11. Tigers: Cam Caminiti, LHP, Saguaro HS, Ariz. (No. 17)
While they might entertain one of the hitters already off the board should they still be available, there has been more talk about arms here, with Caminiti, the top prep lefty in the class, getting the nod over a college pitcher like Trey Yesavage from East Carolina.
