Likely every other team in baseball would have taken Tork 1-1 also, and if he was hitting and fielding like he appeared capable, you’d be fine with it.

But the Tigers did try to move Tork to 3rd base.

Most orgs have enough guys that start at 3B and don't have the arm or as MIF and simply outgrow their quickness that they don't have trouble finding guys to move to 1st in the natural course of things. That said, with the National league adopting the DH, more than ever there is always a place for a great bat

That’s Tork’s only hope anymore.

You forgot “inexplicably”.

Did he play 3rd in college? Or were the Tigers just trying to save face of not being so stupid to take a 1st baseman 1-1, even if he WAS considered the best player in the Covid draft?

Not a lick. Not even at Cape Cod.

He’s going to have to prove he can hit some first.

I meant if he doesn't hit enough for Detroit (low bar), a different team may give him a chance to DH for them. But yeah, he has to hit to keep playing (at least, for most teams.)

That would require us to release Tork or accept a bag of balls for him. But I guess at a certain point he becomes a sunk cost anyway. 🤷‍♂️

he cant hit.  why would anyone want him as a dh?

Because he's still young and has potential. I would think many teams would claim him if he were released. Stick him in their minor leagues and try to "fix" him. Look at some of the players Harris is claiming...

Looks like we're going to have to do this AGAIN, for at least one more year (watch the season ending losses to figure out where in the top 10 of next year's draft that we'll have a chance at getting to...).

Sad.

If you pay 10 million dollars for a race horse, and the horse dies, at the end of the day you're left with a dead horse.

And that’s when you make lemonade, or in this case, beat that horse every chance you get. Do it, do it now. 😎

One thing Avila and Smith had in common is they had to take over at a time when bills were coming due for expensive teams that fell short. I'm not saying they could have done better on the 2017 trades, but there is ample evidence those were owner-mandated (and perhaps league-mandated via the debt service rule) salary dump trades for a team that was bleeding money.

He can hit. He has the ability. Does he need to make some adjustments, sure. Will he? Who knows.

Yup - the thing with Tork is that you do get the impression that enough of his problem is approach that if the right voice could get in his ear, he might finally wise up.

But for me this is also hitting on a more fundamental issue with the Tigers. This regime came in pushing the idea of cutting down on OOZ swing - and that's fine as far as it goes. But Hinch gave away the dirty secret the other day in the post game - the Tigers real hitting problem is getting beat *in the strike zone*. Overcoming that problem is a completely different animal than just preaching plate discipline - it's finding a way to help guys cover/defend more of the K zone. The question is what do they have in their bag of tricks for their hitters in that regard?

In Torkelson's case, the only reason one tries is realistically it doesn't block anyone else from being developed. In my mind, the moment a prospect arrives that continued efforts with Tork would hinder the new guy's development,  Is the moment I would send Tork packing. He is what he is: a failed number 1 prospect. It happens all of the time in baseball.

PS: As an aside...

We're currently tied with the Rangers for #6.

I'll revisit this in September... with 2025's Draft thread...

BA's Updated Mock https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/2024-mlb-mock-draft-5-0-updated-first-round-picks-after-college-world-series/

11. Tigers — Cam Caminiti, LHP, Saguaro HS, Scottsdale, Ariz.

The Tigers continue to be heavily linked to Caminiti, and I see no real reason to move off this pick even with Nick Kurtz sliding out of the top 10 in this scenario. It sounds like Caminiti has really popped on a number of teams’ models, and he remains the favorite to be the first high school pitcher off the board.

My theory is that mental problems are not much easier to solve than physical problems.

Tigers blurb on Kiley McDaniel ESPN column($$)

Quote

Detroit Tigers
Day 1 picks: No. 11, No. 49, No. 72
Bonus pool: $11,921,800

One big question: Where will the board leave the team at No. 11 in a draft with a clear top 10?

Odds are, one of the teams picking in the top 10 will take a player outside of the top 10, either to save money or because they think one of the players in the next tier belongs at the top. Realistically, that applies to picks eight through 10, with leading candidates James Tibbs and Christian Moore. If it happens, and I'd say it is a little more than 50% likely, would the Tigers simply take whichever of those players gets to them? The leading candidates are Konnor Griffin (a prep position player with contact questions) and Nick Kurtz (a first baseman with multiple shoulder injuries in college). This regime's only draft had them taking savings with their top pick (Max Clark) and spending the savings mostly on more high school players. Maybe this whole question is irrelevant, because Detroit is tied to prep lefty Cam Caminiti, and he'll likely be available. Or maybe passing on Wyatt Langford last year will make them rethink that strategy?

I have been thinking about this, if after the top 10 or so it's a drop to the next closest group of talent, I would prefer us to go under slot at 11  with someone like Carson Benge, Theo Guillen or maybe Lomavita if they want to go the catcher route and try to float someone with a late 1st rd grade to 49 with our savings.
