MLBTraderumors speculates St. Louis might trade Brendan Donovan. 26 year old lefty hitter who can play infield and outfield. Contact hitter and he's under control for four more years. There are a few second baseman who might be available but most for only one year. I think Donovan is the type of guy Harris might target.

There's Ha-Seong Kim.  Go get him, Harris!

Anybody listen to Stavenhagen's pod yesterday? He was on fire, criticizing Tork's player of the year and Morosi being a parrot for Eduardo.

Torkelson's progress as a power hitter this year was encouraging, but he was still a weak fielding first baseman with a 105 OPS+.    Definitely not a player of the year or even one who should have been a candidate.

On the Tigers I think that was simply by default.

Or... maybe they want to try and encourage him...?

For position players, I'd probably go with Kerry Carpenter.  I don't know if pitchers were eligible, but there were a few pitchers who wre more deserving.  Tork played 159 games and had some good traditional counting stats which is probably why they pickrd him.

wow... I never really thought about it but on B-R's Tigers page where they show 12 pictures of the leaders by WAR.... Tork is not listed.  His .8 didn't make the cut.   Reese Olsen, Matt Manning, and Alex Lange beat him out.

I was going to say that, but I didn't want to start a WAR sucks discussion.

Torkelson's _2 oWar were wiped out by his -2 dWAR. I'm not sure how much I care about that for a middle of the lineup 1B.

I'll have to listen to the podcast later, but I don't have a lot of strong feelings about TORK winning it, although I probably would have picked Eduardo for his performance pre-injury.

The longevity thing makes a lot of sense... Eddie or Riley probably would have won it had they stayed healthy, but neither did... and in Eddie's case, when he came back he wasn't quite the same pitcher.

Also think that Tork showed legitimate linear growth throughout the year.... he progressively got better as the year went on, and that probably helped his case some too.

If the middle of the line-up 1B has a 140 OPS+ then it doesn't matter so much.  105 is not enough for a one dimensional hitter.

I think Rodriguez was the most valuable player on the team over the course of the season.  I don't think Torkelson was close.  I'm not diappointed with him.  He made good progress over the course of the season, but his overall season was not the best on the team.

Padres Owner Peter Seidler Passes Away

Quote

The Padres have announced that owner and chairman Peter Seidler has passed away at the age of 63.

“The Padres organization mourns the passing of our beloved Chairman and owner, Peter Seidler,” said Padres CEO Erik Greupner. “Today, our love and prayers encircle Peter’s family as they grieve the loss of an extraordinary husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend. Peter was a kind and generous man who was devoted to his wife, children, and extended family. He also consistently exhibited heartfelt compassion for others, especially those less fortunate. His impact on the city of San Diego and the baseball world will be felt for generations. His generous spirit is now firmly embedded in the fabric of the Padres. Although he was our Chairman and owner, Peter was at his core a Padres fan. He will be dearly missed.”

The club also announced that they will open the Home Plate Gate at Petco Park beginning this afternoon for those who wish to gather to pay their respects. Free parking will be available at Tailgate Lot. Seidler has been battling an illness for months but his family has requested that the cause of death remain private at this time, per Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Seidler bought a majority stake of the Padres in November of 2020. He was already part of the ownership group but was approved at that time by the 29 other owners to be the control person in San Diego. By doing so, he was following in the footsteps of his grandfather Walter O’Malley, who owned the Dodgers from 1950 to 1979 and moved them from Brooklyn to Los Angeles.

Once he took control of the Padres, Seidler quickly earned a reputation as one of the boldest and most aggressive owners in the sport. Per the calculations of Cot’s Baseball Contracts, the Padres spent much of the first 20 years of this century with payrolls near the bottom of the league and never higher than the middle. But they have been in the top 10 in each of the past three seasons, getting as high as third in 2023. That period has seen them five nine-figure deals to star players like Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr., Xander Bogaerts and Joe Musgrove while also making headline-grabbing trades for Juan Soto and Yu Darvish.

that is the key with Torkelson. After disastrous April, he righted the ship and his 2nd half OPS+ would have been closer to 120. He might not have been their best player over the season but he may have been over the 2nd half, which is what is promising going forward.
