not sure why SD trades the one player they have who is vastly over-performing his salary, but getting Kim would be awesome, provided they can sign him to an extension. different player, but his production is what you hope Keith or Jung could do. also, they still have no one anywhere in the system to replace Baez should he continue on his current trajectory. Kim would be that guy. also, would be nice to get into the market for top Korean and later Japanese players

Have to cut payroll. That why Soto is on the way out the door.

dWAR is a joke...it's a lot like judging figure skating in the Olympics.

Sure, just blindly looking at WAR, is not recommended.

If you take dwar out of it and just compare his offense to other first basemen, he's a below average hitter at the position.  You can bump him up to average taking his durability into account which is really what WAR is doing by using "above replacement" as the base instead of average.  In that respect, WAR helps him rather than hurts him.

Then you have to decide whether his defense hurts or helps his value, again compared to other first basemen which is the lowest bar for defense.

Finally, you have to consider the value of a first baseman compared to other positions.  I think you have to say that the ability to play more of a skill position would increase a player's value.  How much of a difference? You could choose your own positional value if you don't like the one Tango and others suggest.

Further hampering the Padres are the no trade clauses that seem to be present in the higher dollar longer term contracts.  Some of those are full no trades, some are partial lists.  They may not necessarily be immovable, but it just adds to the complexity.

It's amazing in retrospect how they were held up as a model for what every franchise should do just a mere 9 months ago...

Oh, I don't know.  Some of those contracts are excessive on the back end.  Machado $39M/season age 34 through age 40.  Bogaerts $25M/season age 30 through age 40.  They are the same age.  Think Cabrera and Martinez in 2017 & 2018.  That ain't going to be fun.  Although I suppose there's a reasonable chance that Machado and Bogaerts age more gracefully than Cabrera and Martinez due to physique, training, positional spectrum, etc.

Those are horrible contracts, I don't ever want to see another one of those with the Tigers.

well, it appears to be decreed (or as Sparky would say, cast in stone) that Jace Jung is a 3b and from the testimony of Trammell and he AFL coach, he is apparently channeling the reincarnated arm of Brooks Robinson.

End game announced for Diamond Group RSNs (Bally). Bankruptcy Judge approves them closing their doors at the end of the '24 baseball season.

Too bad we have to put up with Bally for even one more year. I was hoping MLB would take over the production of Tigers games this season.

I’m pretty sure they’re not going to go the YES/Marquee route and start their own Tigers network, since those channels are money losers outside of baseball, plus the RSN is crumbling anyway—as we can see, obvs.

The cable providers, like Xfinity, have a stake in this as well.  It's not just the RSN's or whatever precise network is that will show games. If they try something funny like asking fans to pay $10 a month, even if their cable bill goes down by no longer paying for today's version, that could be just the prompt peole need to ditch cable altogether. There's psychology involved in recurring charges. If all these people paying for cable today are put on notice that they'll need to do something different like get an app or add an item to their cable bill they will get frustrated and even if the math doesn't change much they will interpret it as paying more for something they used to get.  Even if the cost to the network was a pass thru from the customer to the network the provider benefits by being the delivery agent because they needed to pay for all that other stuff too.  Remove that and many people will just drop it or downgrade to bare minimum service.

And Brent Clevlen is the next Al Kaline.

ATT has been upcharging $5/mo for Bally for several years already.

spending $200M on a guy who has thrown 0 MLB pitches would be a calculated risk; cannot see Harris doing this

Scott Harris scouting report:  Smart guy. Very thorough.  Can trust him not to do anything stupid.  The final step is for him to find his balls.

Are you saying the same about the Dodgers, Mets, Yankees, Red Sox GMs, along with about a dozen others?
