Especially if Jake was part of it, as rumored. I suspect Edys was in the deal, as they had to move him. I'd read somewhere, maybe Cody, that the return was less than what a pitcher of his talent-other-things-being-equal would bring back. Then he'd just leave and have no prospect for his most-hated team so we never get back to the playoffs. Bitter KL2 buys that theory. I find this ever-so-slightly plausible than #1, although for this to be the case he would have to believe he would do better this winter than what the Dodgers were offering, which wouldn't surprise me. Tiger337
It seems that Rodriguez got exactly the deal his agent supposedly asked for to make the trade happen.

(Fault Harris) 2-Harris did have detailed discussions with ERod to where he did think he understood him clearly but they simply hadn't connected completely so that despite good faith effort by both Harris and ERod, ERod ended up not liking the deal. (Fault - maybe both of them, maybe neither - stuff happens) 3-Harris did understand what ERod *said* he would accept accurately and ERod simply changed his mind. (Fault ERod) 4-ERod was non-committal in discussions with Harris, basically said "Bring me the deal and I'll decide" and things ran so close to the deadline that by the time they got back to ERod and he didn't like the deal it was just too late to do anything else. (Fault - any or all of ERod/Dodgers/Tigers) Unless someone spills the beans I find any of the above equally likely. I think 3 and 4 are most likely. Harris wouldn't have made it this far in the baseball world by doing #1 and #2. ERod may have just been undecided and didn't want to make a rash move at the last minute with a gun to his head. that's his right. In the end he got $31 million more guaranteed than he current contract was going to pay him. I can't fault a guy for that.
Tigermojo
ERod's deal is 4/$80 with incentives plus a vesting option for a fifth year $99 million total.
Tigermojo
Candy's deal is 3/$45 with a club option that would total $60 million.

I don't generally care about players after they leave the Tigers, up to and including Verlander and Scherzer, but I am actually glad for Jeimer here. oblong
There's Tiger fans on twitter acting like the extra money he's getting over the first 3 years is "not much more".... $11 million is nothing to sneeze at. Nevermind the additional $20M he's getting for the 4th year. Why do fans expect players to do things in the interest of the fans and org and not themselves? Jim Cowan
That is a nice deal for Candelario, it looks like an overpay to me. He'll like Cincinnati, the way that Castellanos and Suarez did.

Harris and Friedman certainly covered their bases I would think. But I will add it's possible (pure speculation) ERod was harboring ill feelings for not being paid the year before during his sabbatical and had an axe to grind. Motor City Sonics
I am completely crestfallen. Candy's never coming back, is he? First they gave his number to another, now he signs with Cincinnati. <sigh>

It seems like the purpose of the winter meetings has changed. With the now constant communication these GMs have available to them, do they really need a face to face meeting in order to get a deal done? Maybe it helps a little bit, but not like it did in the past when you had to negotiate over the phone or fly out to visit. I'm kind of planning on yawning during the winter meetings.
