But that means getting bats and defense at 2B, 3B, and RF.  It'd be nice for one or two of those spots to be right handed hitting (RF is probably the best spot).  Maybe they can figure out a way for it to work with only one of Malloy/Carpenter in the field and the other at DH.  But will Greene require more time at DH than we might like?  That's kind of tricky.  I suppose they can try it for next season and see what happens.

Lee's suggestion is a good one for the OF:

Jung Hoo Lee. Good Outfielder, high contact rates/ very high OBP/ controls the strike zone (a Harris requirement), a bit of speed and a bit of power. How that translates into MLB? Dunno. Won't be a monster power guy. But could be good at everything else.

best buddy with HS Kim so assumption is he's joining SD, who need CFer, not sure how they fit him in budget though

I want to see the Tigers be more aggressive this off-season, but I don't want them to spend for the sake of spending.  if nobody wants to sign a reasonable deal, then move on to trades.  I want them to be creative and try to do things.  I don't believe that "nobody will sign" or that none of their players are worth anything in a trade.  Harris and Greenberg are smart guys, so try to get something done.

exactly ... Im never throwing names out again  i just threw them out as a starting point for a conversation that there are some players available on the market

I wouldnt either ... the Tigers are a bottom 10 offense a high end closer is a luxury

Throwing out names is dangerous because every player either sucks or won't play for Detroit or costs too much!

one big picture thing to keep in mind is what's happening in SF with Harris's old friends. Zaidi fired Kapler and admitted he is next if he cannot figure out how to improve the team. does this sound familiar? constant platooning by Kapler met with jeers when it does not work; frequent dumpster diving on the waiver wire with constant churn at the end of the roster; making a few attempts to land a big fish FA but always falling short; no impactful trades.

Ilitch will, I assume, have a lot of patience, more than SF (or Boston where Bloom got axed in part because he did not want to make a mistake and trade the wrong prospects), but next year's free agents will only be more expensive than last year's free agents.

I'd  be game for him as a stop gap at 3rd... He's a little older then I thought at 33

LAD payroll is pretty clean (even if they do sign Ohtani) but Muncy and Michael Busch look to be the exact same player, so maybe they do move on from the older guy with a lot more injury risk

To be honest, the only people thus far who seem hung up on the dollars are the ones saying everyone else thinks so and so costs too much.

I dont view free agency in terms of them spending dollars to hit a certain threshold... they could sign someone for the league minimum or $30 mil/year, that doesn't matter to me.

I just want them to make good moves that make sense with where they are at. Particularly with this position player crop, there aren't a ton of great options that make a ton of sense... starting pitching is another matter entirely, there's a lot of good money to be burned there if they want to. And I'd be fine with that if the opportunity arose.

If you're shooting for 80 wins a high end closer is a luxury. So go ahead and stick to your game plan there of trying for 80 wins.

I'm not interested in your 80-win team. It's time to shoot for much, much higher. Shooting for 95+ wins, which should be the 2024 goal, means a high end closer is a NECESSITY, not a luxury.
