Alex Lyon is a UFA and will be gone in the offseason.

Having Talbot and Mrazek, IMO...

Says NOTHING about Cossa's NHL time next year.

I think Cossa and his NHL-readiness (or not quite there as of...) say everything about how much NHL time he gets.

IE: Blow the doors off in training camp and trade one of those other two. Start in Grand Rapids (if he's not quite ready) and blow the doors off down there showing that he's ready for the NHL... move one of the other two.

Not ready until the trade deadline but showing it right before then...?

Trade one before the deadline.

Mrazek is "Cossa-readiness Insurance"... nothing more.

IMO.

And what if Yzerman, as Kenny frequently did, decides he wants to bring Lyon back next season? Then Cossa has zero shot at playing.

I'm not ready for "what ifs" at this point.

I want to see it in black and white and then I'll make my comments and judgements.

I like to speculate as much as everyone else on here...

but on this one...

no.

Interesting Joey V quote post trade:

“I thought I’d have a good opportunity there, but things weren’t working out. I couldn’t really tell you why. But everything involved with the coaching change (Todd McLellan replacing Derek Lalonde right after Christmas) and all that stuff — just couldn’t find a real groove to the year, didn’t feel too good about my game, getting out of the lineup a little bit and having to deal with that. Just a lot going on. I thought another opportunity somewhere else (could be good) and see what that brings.”

Sounds like he could have asked to be traded, but I'm also a bit surprised at his quote.  McLellan put him on the top line for a few games when he took over and Joe did what he does.....skate around and not do much else.  With the Blackhawks running basically no systems with a **** roster I guess he could potentially "blossom" there but it certainly won't be into a winning hockey player.

Signing Tarasenko and Gustafsson worked out horribly.  Kane has provided some juice on the PP  and the 2nd line, but he doesn't work at all on defense.

Not a good summer at all

Summer of 2023 was nothing to write home about either, although I did and still do like the DeBrincat trade.

Signed Daniel Sprong, Klim Kostin, Alex Lyon, J.T. Compher, Christian Fischer, Justin Holl, Shayne Gostisbehere and James Reimer.

Sprong, Kostin, Fischer and Reimer didn't work out, but didn't really cause any harm other than the opportunity cost of not finding others instead. Holl made no sense from day one. Compher has disappointed. Gostisbehere matched or exceeded expectations for 1 year @ $4.125mm, but then was lost after one season due to cap management priorities - 35 pts in 56 games this season is a bargain for Carolina at $3.2mm per season. Lyon was a solid signing, good value at $900k/yr.

joe veleno centering the 4th line with bertuzzi on the wing for the hawks tonight.

just to let everyone know the talent level the wings accumulated during the late ken holland era.

I can’t wait for a #58 overall pick of Yzerman to approach 500 NHL career games and record four 20+ goal seasons including 30 goals once. Doubt it will be 2019 or 2020’s 2nd round forwards Mastrosimone,  Niederbach, or Hanas.

i cant wait for yzerman's #6 pick in the draft to ride the bench in the swiss league.

2015: evgeniy schvechnikov, no second round pick

2016: dennis cholowski, givani smith, filip hronek

2017: michael rasmussen, gustav lindstrom

2018: filip zadina, joe veleno, jonatan berggren, and jared mcisaac.

those drafts should be the foundation of this team.  and all you got out of it was hronek (who was dealt in a good trade), and a third and fourth line wingers.

that's pathetic.

i wouldnt trade raymond or seider for all of those guys.

Jacob Trouba scored a goal last night! It was his first of the year. 1 G 12A in 63 games this season for two teams. I know points scored isn’t the be all and end all for defensemen, but still.

A short write-up in today's Vancouver Sun on former Wing Pius Suter, who scored his 21st goal of the season last night. No regrets with the Wings letting him go, but he's been decent for the Canucks @$1.6mm/year.

https://vancouversun.com/sports/hockey/nhl/vancouver-canucks/canucks-4-new-jersey-devils-3-so-points-gained-points-made-with-gutsy-comeback-effort/wcm/4960666b-64d0-4a42-bd5a-ef79a21b2e09

Suter becoming super shooter

Smart and responsible have always been calling cards for the pending unrestricted free agent.

A knock on the Swiss centre is he isn’t the fastest pivot, but he lets the puck do the work by getting into scoring areas. He struck again in the first period on a play that said everything about poise and positioning.

When Marcus Pettersson worked his way down the left way in the offensive zone, he spotted Suter finding a soft area in the slot. And with one quick motion, he took the feed and whipped over the stick side shoulder of Jacob Markstrom for his career-high 21st goal.

Suter’s value continues to rise, which makes you wonder about next season. He’s 28 and a glue guy and penalty kill staple. His expiring two-year deal and US$1.6 million salary cap hit is a bargain. At this stage of his career, he’s probably looking for salary and term. Maybe less of a bump and more security here?

“Smart guy, systems guy,” said Tocchet. “He’s like another assistant coach for us.”

Chychrun gets 8 years at $9m aav.

so take that pipedream off your free agent dreams.

i wonder how much cholowski is getting paid?  i saw him last night plugging away for the devils.

Nope. Save the free agent dreams, and money, for power forwards... which we are basically devoid of.

Call up the kids for defense and see who rises to the top and who gets stuck on the 3rd pairing. Sign a cheap FA (if necessary) for veteran defensive help as the 7th and/or 8th guy, as needed. Maybe even ASP makes it to the 2nd pair with Edvinsson and all of a sudden we may have fixed a crapload of defensive weaknesses. With growing pains included of course.

Brendan Shanahan and Tomas Holmstrom FA types... please. Marner would be dreaming. But... Boeser? Or could we figure out a trade for a Mason McTavish or similar...?

Just my 2 cents.

Philly just fired Torts...

How does this asshole keep getting jobs? He hasn't won anything of substance in a decade and had a bunch of first round playoff exists at best. Furthermore, he acts like a jerk towards his players akin to Mike Babcock (maybe not that bad).

Old Boy network I guess. All you ever hear from the old guard hockey commentariat is what a great guy he is.

So how did the firing of Jim Montgomery work out, Bruins? They fired him 20 games into this season after 135 and 109 point seasons, and they're as abysmal as the Wings now, at 69 points through 73 games. Meanwhile, the Blues who were 9-12-1 before Montgomery have gone 30-16-6 since hiring him, including 14-2-2 since the 4 Nations break.
