So how did the firing of Jim Montgomery work out, Bruins? They fired him 20 games into this season after 135 and 109 point seasons, and they're as abysmal as the Wings now, at 69 points through 73 games. Meanwhile, the Blues who were 9-12-1 before Montgomery have gone 30-16-6 since hiring him, including 14-2-2 since the 4 Nations break.

it was a blessing for montgomery.  the bruins were due for a big regression.

speaking of which, would the wings sign marchand?

I am sure this will have cap implications.

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6245657/2025/03/31/nhl-rogers-sportsnet-broadcasts/

The National Hockey League and Canadian telecommunications giant Rogers have agreed to a new 12-year national broadcasting deal worth $7.7 billion that will begin in 2026, according to multiple reports Monday.

Rogers declined comment when contacted by The Athletic.

Sportico first reported the story Monday, and the Associated Press confirmed it, citing “a person familiar with the deal.”

The new agreement will come at the conclusion of the previous 12-year deal agreed to by both parties, which was signed in 2013 for $5.2 billion Canadian. The deal is expected to allow Rogers to sell some games to other networks like Amazon Prime, which is broadcasting games on Monday nights in Canada through 2026.

Last June, Amazon declined comment when asked if Amazon Prime Monday games would be a gateway to getting more games once Rogers’ current deal expires next year.

The NHL also has broadcasting deals with ESPN and TNT in the United States. Both channels and the NHL agreed to a seven-year contract worth $4.5 billion in 2021.

Canadian NHL teams will continue to have regional deals with either Sportsnet or TSN to broadcast their games. The Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames both agreed to 11-year broadcasting deals with Sportsnet in 2024. The Vancouver Canucks’ current deal with Rogers expires in 2033. Bell recently acquired content rights for the Toronto Maple Leafs last September in a 20-year deal. The Winnipeg Jets, Montreal Canadiens and Ottawa Senators each have broadcasting deals with Bell’s TSN or RDS that run through 2026.

Absolutely incredible fact here.

Gretzky 894 goals in 1487 games

Ovechkin 892 goals in 1485 games.

I really want him to score two goals in the next to games because the chances of that are astronomical.

I think it also shows Ovie is the better goal scorer because the number of goals in the NHL in the 80s was quite a bit higher, right?

ovechkin is a great goal scorer.  maybe the greatest of all time.

but wayne gretzky also had 1200 more assists than ovechkin.  yes, it was a higher scoring era, but gretzky was an offensive phenomenon who made everyone around him better in a way ovechkin could never be by lining up at the left circle and waiting to shoot.

"Minnesota Wild’s Marco Rossi, Toronto Maple Leafs’ Matthew Knies, Edmonton Oilers’ Evan Bouchard, New York Rangers’ K’Andre Miller and Will Cuylle, New York Islanders’ Noah Dobson and Alexander Romanov and Buffalo Sabres’ JJ Peterka and Bowen Byram."

All those guys will be rfas unless they re-sign before the offseason.

if you sign one for $4.58 million it will cost you a second round pick if the other team doesnt match.  $4.5-6.8 costs you a first and a third.  6.8-9.1 costs you a first, second and a third.  $9.1-11.4 costs you two firsts, a second, and a third.  over 11.4 costs you four firsts.

i'm not sure if you could sign any of those guys for 4.5m per year.  if so, i would do it if it put the other team in a cap bind.  but with cap going up, i dont see too many situations where teams wouldnt match a 4.5m offer for any of those guys.  MAYBE the rangers.

would you pony up a first and a third to sign miller to an offer sheet at 6.8m per season?  i'm not sure i would if the wings are picking top 10.  but that's probably the only way you can get one of the guys on that list.

i guess if the leafs re-sign marner for big money and still want tavares they wouldnt sign knies, but i wouldnt give up a first and third for him.  maybe a second.  big winger who can score?

Oh, Gretzky is the overall better player, but Ovie's a better goal scorer.     Points-wise, nobody's catching Gretzky.

I think Howe is better than both of them.

The only milestone goal or hit or score I can remember seeing in person is Gretzky scoring against the Wings at the Joe to tie Espo’s single season record of 76 goals. Quite late in the 3rd period if I recall correctly. 1982?

Update: 1982 it was. Link found.

Only milestone I think I saw was Sammy Sosa breaking Rudy York's monthly HR record at Tiger Stadium -- the night they had the Stanley Cup there and you could take a picha with it.

When Cecil was going for HR #50, I went to a game and Ron Cameron (yes, that Ron Cameron) asked if I was there to see the 50th and I said "I'm here to see Chet Lemon hit #5".     And Chettie did it !!!!!    I love that guy.

How lame would it be if he breaks the record on an empty net goal?

Ovechkin has said he will make sure not to score the record breaker into an empty net.

I have an idea. Knies was a 2nd round pick in 2021 so Detroit could offer Toronto, in exchange for Knies, all seven of the Wings’ 2019-2021 2nd round picks: Tuomistro, Mastrosimone, Johansson, Wallinder, Niederbach, Hanas and Buium. We just have to remind the Leafs that Yzerman is a great drafter so they just need to be patient.

the problem with the restricted route is that EVERYONE has money now because of the cap going up.  if you want a guy like knies or miller youre going to have to offer them a deal where you part with a first round pick next year.  otherwise the other team will just match it.  do you want to part with the #10 pick in the draft?  maybe they should considering two of the things they desperately need RIGHT NOW are a 23-25 year old good defenseman to pair with seider or edvinsson and a big strong winger who plays physical and score.

one would hope after years of accumulating multiple second rounders we would have one of those, but alas, we still wait on cross hanas, dylan james, dmitriy buchelnikov, william wallinder, etc...

back to rfas...so many other teams in the wings' position are flush with cap space now and can offer more money, montreal, philly, columbus, etc.

as stanley keeps snidely pointing out, some of those second and third round picks yzerman accumulated are going to have to hit NEXT YEAR.  the timeline for those guys to be nhlers is next season.  the timeline for them to be stars is passed, but they can still become quality nhlers.

heck, dennis cholowski is still in the nhl so why are we letting jeff petry and justin holl block buium and wallinder?  unless theyre not actually good...

It's ESPN's Breaking News about Alex Ovechkin.

How will this record effect the Dallas Cowboys this upcoming season?
