Israel has now absorbed though largely defanged two large attacks by Iran. I find it nearly impossible to believe there won't be consequences delivered in Teheran after this one. I would guess the Israeli War Cabinet is not still debating the 'whether' but only the where. Will they go after the IRG leadership, the Political leadership, the Nuke program? 1776 Posted October 10, 2024 Posted October 10, 2024 DUBAI—Tehran is threatening in secret diplomatic backchannels to target the oil-rich Arab Gulf states and other American allies in the Middle East if their territories or airspace are used for an attack on Iran, said Arab officials. Israel has threatened Tehran with a severe reprisal after Iran fired about 180 ballistic missiles at Israel earlier this month, with some Israeli officials and commentators pushing for damaging strikes on Tehran’s nuclear facilities or oil infrastructure. In that event, Iran has warned it would respond with devastating hits on Israel’s civilian infrastructure, and would retaliate against any Arab state that facilitated the attack, the officials said. The Arab officials said the countries that Iran has threatened include Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, all of which host U.S. troops. These states have told the Biden administration that they don’t want their military infrastructure or airspace to be used by the U.S. or Israel for any offensive operations against Iran, the officials said. While the Iranian threats are vague, they have raised concerns in energy-rich Persian Gulf states that their oil facilities—long viewed as protected by an American security umbrella—could be hit, the Arab officials said. U.S. military installations and forces in the region could also be at risk in a region with one of the highest concentrations of American troops in the world, they added. WSJ 10/10/2024 Quote

WSJ 10/10/2024 a lot of bluster here. The US, Saudi's and Isr could blow what ever is left of Iran's ability to project power off the map about 5 minutes after any shooting started and the Mullahs know that. Iran will get a few licks in but they know they will end up on the losing end of the exchange big time. Keep in mind that the reason a state like Iran spent so much on proxies is because they were conservative about the risks were willing to take themselves. Their problem is that in trying to save their credibility after leaving their routed proxies out to dry, they've now crossed the Rubicon with the 2nd attack on Israel. US pressure notwithstanding, an Israeli strike is coming - it will be major and they don't know where it's going to fall. Edited October 10, 2024 by gehringer_2 Quote
1776 Posted October 13, 2024 Posted October 13, 2024 The needle is moving. US troops will be involved: WASHINGTON—The Biden administration is sending an advanced antimissile system to Israel along with American troops to operate it, moving to bolster its top Middle East ally’s defenses against an Iranian attack, the Pentagon said Sunday. The deployment of the Thaad system, a ground-based interceptor designed to shoot down ballistic missiles, marks a significant step in American efforts to directly protect Israel against an enemy attack by putting U.S. soldiers on the ground. Mr.TaterSalad Posted October 15, 2024 Posted October 15, 2024 Jerusalem Post: US threatens Israel: Resolve humanitarian crisis in Gaza or face arms embargo - report From the article . . . The US told Israel that it would impose an arms embargo on the Jewish state if it does not resolve the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, N12 reported on Tuesday. The White House reportedly expressed deep concern over the "deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Gaza in recent weeks" and called for urgent steps within the next month to reverse this trend. ben9753 Posted October 15, 2024 Posted October 15, 2024 Maybe they should send a strongly worded letter to Hamas to release the hostages. 2 Quote
Biff Mayhem Posted October 15, 2024 Posted October 15, 2024 Or maybe they should lecture Hamas about the humanitarian crisis since it is Hamas who initiated it and perpetuates it by hiding behind citizens and confiscating the provided aid. But no let’s keep blaming those pesky Jews for retaliating against an enemy attack and ensuring that their citizens are safer going forward. 1 Quote
smr-nj Posted October 16, 2024 Posted October 16, 2024 Multiple things can be true at the same time: 1. There is no negotiation possible with an entity whose declared purpose is to wipe Israel from the face of the earth. That is Hamas. 2. Other entities in the region have been talking out of both sides of their mouths. Calling for peace ,all while harboring terrorists. Supplying arms & $$…. 3. Netanyahu was distracted by his own autocratic power grab attempts. He took his very corrupt eyes off the ball….. and like all wanna be dictators, he’s now overdoing it in the death and destruction department. 2 1 Quote

And the biggest potential for a solution miss is ego in the leadership of both Israel and Iran preventing any win-win from getting off the ground. I'm also a little tired of the talking head view that this is so dangerously increasing the odds of a wider war. It's not. If Iran was willing to do more for its proxies than it has, it would have already done so before both were already so damaged. These operations by Israel are about making Iran's support of proxies more expensive than it is worth to them - a task that many argue the US could have been doing more effectively for the last 20 years but largely punted on. And of course, the other irony is that with the exception of Palestinians (and even some of them), the whole Sunni world wants to see Israel (and the US) succeed in causing Iran to pull back despite whatever lip service they offer in public. ewsieg Posted October 22, 2024 Posted October 22, 2024 I fully expect Israel to go after regime change in Iran with their attack, so military, oil, and nuke site(s). I don't think they go in until after 11/5 though. Israel isn't good at being subtle. I just hope they don't cripple the country so much that it leads to complete chaos after, increasing the chance for other militants to take over. Quote

Speaking of complete chaos, how do think Russia and its allies would respond to your scenario? How do you think the US would respond? This is where it would get really interesting. Likely, too interesting. Quote
