Will still make the playoffs likely, but have no chance with this defense. Even if the win today, there is little optimism to take away. Another large step back. Another large step back. 5 out of 6 games where they've looked like garbage for the most part. The book is out on them now and they've been exposed as a result. Also, Ben Johnson has called a garbage game today. Not running enough when they were up 21-0, no misdirections, a pitch to Montgomery on another possession that stood out as WTF. He gave him someone coming off an ACL tear as his CB2 and completely neglected the other side of the defensive line from Hutch. Even when injuries happened, he stood pat at the deadline. No ability to generate consistent pressure with the personnel you do have, so the one new guy you bring in gets one snap, gets a sack, and then he's rotated right back out. I'm not the coach on the field and I don't know diddly about these guys and how they want to use them ultimately. We had needs everyone could see and we chose not to address them. I really, really like a lot of what Brad Holmes has done. But that doesn't make him infallible or immune to criticism. He's had a number of whiffs on defense in particular. Some are as you mentioned above. As well, drafting a 350lbs. DT with back problems and almost trading up for the guy. Drafting Josh Paschal and getting nothing out of him. Passing on Jalen Carter for a RB.
