Will be very hypocritical if the writers vote in Big Papi, who used, and not the others only because he’s a good guy.

He also said F****** when addressing Red Sox fans after the marathon bombing.  That made him a hero and led them to the world championship.

I'd go Bonds, Clemens, A-Rod, Schilling, Ramirez, Jones.

As mentioned before I care more about how you were viewed at the time of your peak compared to your peers than your overall career totals. Also I don't care if you did steroids if I feel you were a HOFer even if you discount the years that you allegedly did them. That's why I don't have Sosa on here cause even though his career would warrant it if you take away the late 90s early 00s part of his career when he was accused of doing them he isn't a HOFer.

With that out of the way I feel the first 3 don't warrant an explanation other than to say Bonds is arguably the greatest hitter of all time, Clemens the best pitcher of the last 50 years and aside from maybe Trout, A-Rod is the best all around player I have seen in my 35 years of watching baseball.

I included Schilling cause not only did he have a 5 seasons of 8 plus WAR which is insane but I also think you have to include his postseason numbers and he is second all time among pitchers in postseason WPA.

Jones I put in cause he is the best fielding CF I have seen in my time watching baseball, that alone may warrant consideration but he had a 7 year peak where he averaged over 6 WAR a season. His JAWS score is also more than many other HOF CFers.

Manny I put in cause he is simply one of the best hitters of all time. His OPS+ is just 1 point behind Hank Aaron and Willie Mays, the same as Frank Robinson and ahead of guys like Miggy and Pujols. Plus he is one of the best postseason hitters of all time.

Also I do put some emphasis on the "Fame" part, it's not super important but it is an intangible that I think warrants consideration which is why if I was an actual voter and did more thorough research I may even include David Ortiz on that list.  Yes Edgar was a better player and you could argue that since he isn't in no DH should be but I don't think that is fair. Two wrongs shouldnt make a right. Ortiz was one of the most feared hitters for 15 years, had some of the biggest hits in the playoffs in recent memory, was one of the most famous baseball players during his run and overall was one of the best at what he was asked to do and that's mash.

Martinez is in.  It took a long time, but he made it in 2019.  I think Ortiz deserves credit for his strong post-season play, although I put a lot more emphasis on the regular season.  It's also ok to consider "fame" as a qualification as long as you are consistent.  I personally wouldn't though.

I will look at this more later because I love this stuff, but right now I'll go with Bonds, Clemens, Rodriguez, Schilling, Rolen, Helton.

Rolen is under the radar, a fine defensive player at third base who, in his first 10 full seasons, had an OPS+ of at least 120 for 9 of those 10 years.

I like JAWS as a measure of prime performance.  Rolen holds his own based on that measure.

You know what it kind of reminds me of (on a quick summary level)?

Rolen had a better prime, Whitaker maybe a better career.

Pete Rose is one of greatest to play the game and should be in the HOF.  He may have gambled but he bet on himself not against himself where he could rig a game.

What about all the other players who were declared permanently ineligible because they gambled on a game in which they had a duty to perform? Should they all be reinstated back into the game? Or just Pete?

They probably shouldn't be, but MLB's hypocritical relationship with gambling is making me reconsider.  The logical thing would be to punish MLB for promoting gambling on the game, but that is obviously not going to happen.

I'm interested in what Bunker thinks about this.
