I wouldn't mind adding a veteran safety (and NOT re-signing Ceedy Duce...).

But one of the vets who was cut and ends up at the end of FA as a bargain. I think that's a great spot to add an inexpensive veteran who can be great in the locker room...

Iffy and Kerby are the starters so just add someone to put behind them, providing support (in a myriad of ways...).

Grant Newsome had a 69.7 PFF grade, 49 tackles, 2INTs in 13 games started last year. While I think Newsome is a nice player, he seems like yet another CB2 type of guy. We have two CB2s on our roster already, we don't need to add another one IMO.

It's interesting he has the same PFF grade as Denzel Ward who is Cleveland's number one CB. Both have the same number of targets even though Newsome played fewer games. I wouldn't be disappointed depending on the compensation.

Is Newsome a guy who is significantly better than Cam Sutton and a CB1 type of player? He's not on PFFs top 32 list either. So they have 32 other starters ranked ahead of him. Maybe I am getting too hung up on this idea of who is and isn't CB1 material and having two good players back there at CB versus a true, #1 lockdown guy is suffice.

He's significantly better than Jerry Jacobs. Sneed, who a lot of people fawn over, has a 71 PFF grade so it's not like he's graded any better.

Yeah, I guess their stats aren't so dissimilar. Sneed only had 2INTs to go along with 78 tackles. Newsome could have gotten another 10-12 tackles had injury not kept him out 4 games. So in the end, they would have been statistically close to one another. Newsome had and almost 15 point higher PFF grade than Sutton too.

So upon further review, I take back what I said earlier about Newsome and I guess I'd be alright with the Lions acquiring him.

The PFF grading model where each play is graded -2 to 2 and then totaled up for a game score is a far from perfect system to grade corners.    It’s very possible to get burned deep for the game losing TD and still get a high game grade.   You can do the opposite and get a game winning pick 6 and end up with a low grade.

They were playing him at nickel because of who else they had, he's better outside.

It's funny seeing the meltdown on this other board that I frequent. "Holmes is doing nothing" "Holmes doesn't care to address any needs" etc.

First of all, besides the fact that it's asinine to criticize Holmes like 5 hours into the offseason, do these people know Brad Holmes? He's not going to overpay in the first wave of free agency. Holmes can be unpredictable in the draft but he's predictable in free agency in now his 4th go at it. He's not going to overspend for the A level free agents so I guess people will continue to get mad hoping for the splashy moves.

also remember that the cap is going up so salaries go up too.  its the cap percentage to watch.

Yep, I've been saying this for a while. I think the Lions did well with Glasgow taking this into consideration, I thought he'd get something like a 3 year $30m deal on the open market.

I haven't seen any player sign yet that I would say I really wish the Lions signed that player to that contract.
