Because we need a corner capable of covering a team's WR1 and Sutton got burnt in several games last year covering other teams WR1.

There's not a whole lot of guys in the league that can consistently cover WR1s, those guys are going to get their yards one way or another. I'm more concerned with not letting the other guys get theirs too.

I’m very meh on this trade.  I’ll trust Brad but it sounds like we’ve acquired another #2 corner at the cost of a 3rd round pick.

I don't hate the player by any means, just as I don't hate Cam Sutton either. I just don't know if we acquire our CB1 that will be our primary corner going up against other teams WR1. In Tampa I believe Jamel Dean was their CB1 and received a lot of the top matchups.

Remember that block by Craig Reynolds against Tampa last year? The player he lit up is none other than Carlton Davis.

Well we know he can take a hit

Davis is very talented, he can cover anybody, he's just been inconsistent the last couple of years, likely due to injuries, he plays hard.

6 seasons in the league and the most games that Davis has played in a season is 14.  He’s seems to have an injury problem.

I don't think injury concerns dissuade Holmes. If the players medicals clear the team and they like the guy they will acquire him. I also think this move gives them more flexibility in the draft to just go and take the BPA on their board and not feel like they have to worry about need in any capacity.

Durability is apart of overall success. If injuries impact your level of play and you can't be your team's primary CB to cover another teams WR1 that could be an issue. I like Davis as a player from what I've read and I don't hate the trade value given that they gave up a late 3rd for him. I just don't know whether we got a CB1 here or another CB2 that we're going to force in there to go against the top receivers we'll face next year.

I like Davenport. I remember the Saints LOVED him back in 2018. Mortgaged the future to go move up for him. That didn’t work out but clearly Glenn likes what he brings to the table.

I think he's perfectly fine as a player that won't have to carry the team on his shoulders.

He sets the edge and plays the run really well... so he's the starter but really, he's complimentary to Hutch. Him and Paschal opposite hutch make me feel better. He might still have some pass rush too... but other guys can come in that are more explosive and.. again, he doesn't have to carry the pass-rush but just needs to be an effective complimentary player.

Nothing spectacular but I'll take the veteran and his experience. Also... watch the Lions add an inexpensive extension and drop his cap hit... I'd love it more.

To be fair, he only had to do that in Minnesota playing opposite Hunter. He was pretty meh at it.

Name a cornerback in the NFL who doesn't get dinged up, there are damned few.

.... Personally, I would have preferred signing a guy like Fuller who is probably on Davis's level and not giving up the draft compensation but maybe that wasn't in the cards for Holmes.

1) Fuller might be hunting one of these crazy contracts. And most likely will get one.

2) I'm guessing that Holmes' thought process is to cover the position for at least a year, or maybe two, with Sutton/ Davis/ etc... And to draft guys that he thinks the team can develop and take over in the next year or two. Cheaper options.

Late 2nd/ early 3rd: Look for the Lions to draft Khyree Jackson, Cam Hart, Caelon Carson, or Max Melton. Or two of those guys and he hunts pass rushers in the later (4-6th) rounds...

I'm not sure how the NFL compensation works but if Davis were to have a solid year and for some reason the Lions decide not to keep him and he goes elsewhere would he qualify for a comp pick? If so the Lions could recoup the pick they traded for him down the road.

Sure, plus, as things stand, they are likely to get a 3/4 for the loss of Jackson. If they had signed a pricey cornerback instead of the trade, that would have offset that.

It depends on what players the Lions sign that offseason. He would qualify for a comp pick if the conditions are met. They did trade their own 3rd and not the Vikings so it's almost a comp pick.

There really isn't a CB1 available. The CB1 was going to be acquired via the draft.

I think Sneed and Fuller are the CB1s that are available. Kendall Fuller had an 83 PFF grade and being asked to be Washington's CB1 last season, covering the top WRs from the opposing team.

He also had a 52 grade and 120 passer rating against in 2022 which gives me some trepidation about him.
