Another depth signing possibly coming our way.

If you're into PFF grades, in limited action he has graded 70 and above that past few seasons. He would likely be a special teamer.

What do you think it would take to get Donald back in the NFL for a 1 year deal come camp and would you want Brad Holmes to go after him?

He’s under contract with the Rams through 2024, so it would take a trade, unless he took a year off first.

Isn't he under contract for 1 more year with the Rams vs. through 2024? I might be remembering wrong but I thought Sanders was technically under Lions control even years after retirement. I thought I remember like 3 or 4 years after he retired there was some off the wall speculation that the Lions who trade his rights to someone else if Sanders wanted to come out of retirement because he technically has to fulfill the years left on his contract, not the "date range."

You're correct. I had to do some digging, but I found this, from OTC on Luck's retirement. In part: "Luck's contractual rights will remain with Indy as long as they do not terminate the contract. If he returns to play football his contract will kick in again and continue as if he never left."

In hindsight, I actually remember this being a slight against Calvin's retirement. He complained about the way he was treated with the money being requested back, but in fact held a lot of leverage over the Lions, both if he had demanded a trade and refused to re-work his contract, and if he had sat out a year and then just reported to camp a year later. His massive cap hit would have just appeared overnight on the Lions' books and they would have been forced to either trade him or cut him very quickly.

I think this also delays a "need" to put Brodric Martin into the starting lineup or even a rotation.

It means Brodric may be entering "Reader School" and may not even emerge, in a meaningful way, until 2026.

That would stun me, 2026?,  I think he plays more this season and a lot more in 2025.

Reader is coming off the quad and I think you will see a heavy rotation on the DL as a whole.

To trade up for a guy, give up multiple picks, take him in the third and don't see time until his contract year?  You may be right but I think he earns the time and plays a lot in 2025. I'm looking forward to see what he has done this offseason body wise and then the new DL coach as well.

Edit: or he is a complete bust and out by 2026

I didn't say "don't see time".

I said "in a meaningful way".

Meaning, I would expect him to be a part of a rotation... but with limited snaps until Reader hands those snaps over (through injuries, or Readers' slow-down/ ineffectiveness, or Martin really catches on/ catches fire.)

Any of which could happen.

But, again... the team does not have to "push" or "rely" on Martin, they can rely on Reader. When Martin takes off and outplays Reader... he can take over for him. Whether that's at the end of 2025 or middle of 2026... I couldn't say. Nor is it my place. I'll leave that up to DC...

Right.

I expect him to be in a rotation at some point but they don't "need" to force him in there. Meaning if Levi is the #3 tackle because he's more advanced/ football ready than Martin... they can afford to wait on him until he's ready to join in the rotation.

I don't know when that will be.

I'm just saying they don't need to rush him or force him in there if he's not ready yet.

Plus...

I think Reader is going to "SCHOOL!!!" him over the next year...

I went off the deep end with season tickets. I upgraded my two to two tickets in Club 200, and then added two in a corner, row 9.

Just don’t ask about the cost.

Don’t sweat it.  I wish that I had spent more on stuff like this that I enjoyed before I got married and started a family.   Now I spend very little of my discretionary income on things for myself.

I also assume that for at least the next few seasons, the seats in the corner will end up paying for themselves if you sell most of the games.
