I'm ignorant to these kinda things but hypothetically if the Lions decide to just carry 2 QBs and it's Sudfeld or Fromm does that put Hooker on waivers or is there a way to stash him on the practice squad?

A player would have to clear waivers before being assigned to a teams practice squad, I think?

Fromm is decisive.   Sudfeld looked unsure.   Hooker is raw but electric.    Hopefully we don't have to see any of them in a close game this coming season.

fromm looks great against the steelers' udfas.

sudfeld and hooker are your backups.

No one would claim Sudfeld.

You are correct.  The question is do the Lions trust Hooker as the #2?  Sure Sudfeld would make the practice squad but if you elevate Sudfeld on gameday as the emergency backup you can only bring him in the game if Goff and Hooker got hurt.  If you want to bring Sudfeld in as the primary backup he has to be on the active roster.

That's why I think if the Lions are looking to hold onto one more player at a different position... that they take the chance on waiving Sudfeld and signing him back.

I think the team might also be interested in holding onto Fromm but he's a no-brainer to be waived and brought back to the practice squad.

So the questions would be:

1) Can we have two QB's on the PS? If it's only one, it's Sudfeld. If two, they might try to squeeze Fromm on there as well.

2) If Sudfeld is the QB3 on game days, MUST he be on the 53? I mean, they can probably make a move after they've brought him back to the PS... but just asking for clarity. Meaning, can he be on the PS but brought up on game day solely to be the QB3, and then revert back to PS immediately after the game? Just wondering...

Well... that answered my Q #2.

You can have 2 QBs on the practice squad however you only have 16 spots.  Probably not worth taking the extra spot unless you have a lingering injury issue with one of the QBs.

Or...

The team feels that Sudfeld is going to only be Goff's clipboard holder and on-field/ film room "coach", and that Fromm actually could turn into a viable QB3 or even QB2.

It's a tricky situation depending less on Sudfeld (they know who he is) versus Fromm (does he have any real potential or there's not enough actually there to care?) Those questions I have no idea on what they're thinking... but we'll find out soon.

As for the 16 spots on the PS... I think there's enough room there to maneuver that if they did want to keep Fromm, they would without having any problems.

The next issue after that would be, how many of these underperforming WR3's can they waive and get onto the PS, and will one of them, any one of them, please stand up and take ahold of the "X" receiver position for good. Please.

DPJ looked like garbage. I think he's getting waived. I don't think Isaiah Williams gets waived... but who actually sticks as the 5th WR after IW, ASB, JW, and Khalif? That's a tough one.

I think it's possible to carry 2 QBs on the practice squad.  I just don't think they will.

As far WR.  I think DPJ is good as gone now.  I think you have to keep Isaiah Williams now.  I think the Lions now try to add via trade or waiver wire.

Every one else outside of Isaiah has not impressed so I believe that to be an extremely high probability right now (trade or waiver pick up...). Most likely trade because we're not very high up in waiver claims ranking.

If we're adding a WR #3 or #4 via free agency there is one name I'd be interested in. We all know we're not adding a slot/inside guy. We need another big-bodied, outside presence to work along with Jamo. I saw that former Titans first round pick Corey Davis applied to be reinstated into the league after taking a year off and was granted that. As well, he was granted a his release from the Jets and hit free agency. Davis has the traits and skillset I'd like to think Holmes and Campbell are looking for. I don't know what kind of culture fit and locker room he is and that obviously matters as much as the talent he brings to the team. Davis is still only 29 years old though and had a decent enough season two years ago playing with a rotational cast of QBs with the Jets organization. I'd love for Davis to at least get a workout.

Pride of Detroit: Dan Campbell Admits Keeping James Houston a Tough Decision

I don't understand this at all and I don't understand the aversion this coaching staff seems to have for pure, situational pass rushers. Why the hell wouldn't you want a guy on your team that specializes in getting after the QB and disrupting plays in the backfield with his explosiveness. Why the obsession with him having to be a SAM or an every down guy? What's wrong with a rotational pass rusher? I think keeping Houston adds far more value to this team that keeping another DB or LB or some special teams only defensive player. I just don't get how we are sitting here two years in a row now still doing the bubble watch for a guy like Houston. I mean, the dude's no Von Miller or Reggie White out there, but as a situational, get after the QB specialist, I would want that guy on my team when you need someone to just disrupt a pass and put a little heat on the QB.

He’s on the team.  Don’t sweat it.

James Houston is an athletic pass rusher with one great move.  The speed rush duck under had great success for a short time.  Now it’s on tape and teams can easily prepare for it.   He needs to add more tricks to his bag if he’s going to stay in the league.  Last year’s injury was a big setback and it doesn’t sound like he’s made a lot of strides expanding his rush game.

Cut Sudfeld, after cuts put Iffy or Martin on IR, resign Sudfeld to 53, after 4 games and Iffy and Martin are ready, someone else will be hurt.

I don’t think it’s a given. If they can only keep one of Houston or Ukwu, I think they may lean Ukwu, who can pass rush and provide something in run defense as well.

I think they try to trade Houston for a WR3 or WR4 before they outright cut him though.

There's no way in hedoublehockeysticks that Hooker gets waived and he would immediately get picked up.

Can you imagine losing Hooker for nothing because Sudafed or Fromm HAD TO be on the roster? My Lord

So to answer your question, Yes, cut players have to pass through waivers.  And a team can sign a player to their 53 man roster off of any team's practice squad.  So no, Hooker will not get cut.  He is 100% on the team.  As mentioned above, they may choose to waive Suffield initially as he is extremely unlikely to be claimed, and then resign him prior to week 1 (after they put anyone besides Mosely and Comminsky on IR).  They did a similar thing last year in having no kickers on their initial 53 man roster.
