So to answer your question, Yes, cut players have to pass through waivers.  And a team can sign a player to their 53 man roster off of any team's practice squad.  So no, Hooker will not get cut.  He is 100% on the team.  As mentioned above, they may choose to waive Suffield initially as he is extremely unlikely to be claimed, and then resign him prior to week 1 (after they put anyone besides Mosely and Comminsky on IR).  They did a similar thing last year in having no kickers on their initial 53 man roster.

Waiver rules confusion. Can teams recall a player if another team tries to claim them? And is there a limit of how many players a team can lose?

Asked and answered earlier in this thread. Yes, a player has to clear waivers.

Only players who have accrued four seasons or less go through waivers. Players like Sudfeld become unrestricted free agents, and could re-sign with the Lions practice squad without clearing waivers, if he so chose to.

Ohhhh...thank you. So yeah, cut him and keep Hooker. H20 put enough preseason plays on film that would attract other teams.

No recalls.

They can lose ALL of them... but that would be terribly unlikely.

The guys that just miss the cut (just miss the 53-man roster)... Those will be guys that would most likely be lost. Still, another team has to waive a guy on THEIR 53 in order to grab a new guy on a waiver claim. It just limits the amount of actual waiver claims that realistically will be made.

For the Lions, if it's a critical player they don't want to lose: Don't waive them. Period.

Waiving Sudfeld? Not a problem.

Trying to waive someone like Manu, who is still terribly raw, but other teams can see his athleticism and potential: he would be claimed.

Yeah, it's new territory for the Lions to be losing quality players instead of scouring other teams waived players. We may lose a few decent players. I wonder if we'll lose James Houston? If they plan on cutting him, make a deal for a future draft pick for him?

DPJ did not find himself in a crowded reveiver room, he was practically given the job when they (correctly) let reynolds walk.  and he played half-hearted football.  he deserved to be cut.

he was probably the best pure athlete michigan has had at receiver in quite some time and he has been nothing but a disappointment in college and the pros.

sayonara.  someone might give him another chance because he is such a good athlete, but he's running out of time.  hope he saved his money.

He’s from Detroit so you can’t count out Yzerman trying to sign him for the Wings.

That's a fluff tweet. Schultz doesn't want to **** where he eats. DPJ's agent gave him the news, he can't just say "dude sucks so he got cut".

But yeah, that "crowded" WR room may only have four make the initial 53-man. DPJ was given a golden ticket to make this roster, showed up out of shape and failed conditioning, and then couldn't outcompete the 2s and 3s of the Giants, Bengals, and Steelers. Bye.
