Detroit Lions 2024 Offseason Thread

Next commercial needs to feature a blonde woman with kids wearing a Stafford Rams jersey walking into an Applebees and the whole restaurant turns and looks at her and boos. Ryan Gosling then walks in wearing a Lions Goff jersey and Campbell greets him and hands him a menu and says you’re good enough for Applebees.

If my incessant posting in the last week hasn't told you that I am beyond ready for this season to start, this post absolutely will. I have compiled an officially official ranking of the 54 games in the Campbell era.

My scientific process involved looking at the 23 schedule, then 22, then 21, and ranking each game as I went. Hindsight was permitted for this exercise, as otherwise, every single loss would have been tied for the worst game ever.

Disagree if you dare, but science doesn't lie. Putting it in a quote so it doesn't take up so much screen space. Black is year three, blue is year two, and red is year one.

Lo and behold:

Quote
  1. Rams @ Lions: 01/14/2024 (W 24-23): obvious #1. Short of an NFC Championship, this will hold #1 for a long, long time. (so about four more months).
  2. Buccaneers @ Lions: 01/21/2024 (W 31-23): obvious #2. The roof about went off the stadium when Barnes intercepted Mayfield's pass.
  3. Lions @ Chiefs: 09/07/2023 (W 21-20): this game set the 2023 season on the road to being the greatest in Lions history.
  4. Lions @ Vikings: 12/24/2023 (W 30-24): the Iffy interception to seal this is one where Lions fans can remember exactly where they were.
  5. Lions @ Packers: 01/08/2023 (W 20-16): we didn't know it yet, but this game was the Lions telling everyone that the division was theirs in 2023.
  6. Vikings @ Lions: 12/05/2021 (W 29-27): this game is by far and away my favorite regular season game to have attended in-person. Also my first win as a season ticket holder. Seeing Goff embrace Campbell after the walk off told you, maybe they have something special here after all.
  7. Cardinals @ Lions: 12/19/2021 (W 30-12): two weeks later, they blew out the 10-3 Cardinals and gained national attention for the first time.
  8. Packers @ Lions: 11/06/2022 (W 15-9): in the moment, this was just an awesome win that we desperately needed. In hindsight, it's sparked a 20-7 run the likes of which we have never seen in this city.
  9. Lions @ Jets: 12/18/2022 (W 20-17): this is just a cult favorite of mine. Brock Wright's 51-yard TD and Zuerlin's kick going wide as time expires. Great game.
  10. Vikings @ Lions: 12/11/2022 (W 34-23): the national media knew who we were by now. We were favored and still covered the spread. Jamo's first TD and Sewell's reception to ice it stand out here.
  11. Bears @ Lions: 11/19/2023 (W 31-26): it's always fun to beat the Bears, especially when you embarrass them in come-from-behind fashion.
  12. Lions @ Packers: 09/28/2023 (W 34-20): we dominated this game in the first half. The Packers got booed off Lambeau into the locker room.
  13. Lions @ Chargers: 11/12/2023 (W 41-38): the defense didn't make the trip, but a walk off field goal is always sweet.
  14. Jaguars @ Lions: 12/04/2022 (W 40-14): just a good ole fashioned ass kicking.
  15. Bears @ Lions: 01/01/2023 (W 41-10): just a good ole fashioned ass kicking.
  16. Broncos @ Lions: 12/16/2023 (W 42-17): just a good ole fashioned ass kicking.
  17. Lions @ Giants: 11/20/2022 (W 31-18): I remember I went to the Bills/Browns game being played at Ford Field this day, but was following along on the scoreboard.
  18. Lions @ Buccaneers: 10/15/2023 (W 20-6): The Craig Reynolds block will forever stand out about this game.
  19. Raiders @ Lions: 10/30/2023 (W 26-14): This was a sloppy game last year, but it was Monday Night, the debut of the retro helmets, and we won, so who am I to complain?
  20. Lions @ Bears: 11/13/2022 (W 31-30): They should have lost this game, kind of a theme against the Matt Nagy Bears, but good teams find ways to win.
  21. Commanders @ Lions: 09/18/2022 (W 36-27): I remember the Charles Harris safety most about this game. This was a really fun atmosphere.
  22. Packers @ Lions: 01/09/2022 (W 37-30): A meaningless game, but a statement nonetheless.
  23. Panthers @ Lions: 10/08/2023 (W 42-24): just a good ole fashioned ass kicking, but when you do it against a college team it just doesn't feel the same.
  24. Vikings @ Lions: 01/07/2024 (W 30-20): Largely meaningless game but I remember the heart attacks afterwards when LaPorta got hurt. All's well that ends well.
  25. Falcons @ Lions: 09/24/2023 (W 20-6): I honestly barely remember this game, even though it was just last year. I just remember we made Desmond Ridder look like Desmond Ridder.
  26. Lions @ Saints: 12/03/2023 (W 33-28): I remember this game well and it annoyed me, because they almost blew it despite going up big early.
  27. Lions @ Rams: 10/24/2021 (L 28-19): This was a fun game, for a loss. I remember they played with nothing to lose, onside kicks, trick plays, anything they could throw at the eventual Super Bowl champs. They hung around too.
  28. Ravens @ Lions: 09/26/2021 (L 19-17): Now that we are good, we can laugh more and cry less about Tucker breaking the record.
  29. 49ers @ Lions: 09/12/2021 (L 41-33): If they had managed to complete this crazy comeback, it would have been way higher on the list. In hindsight, a good introduction to the Dan Campbell era with a terrible roster.
  30. Bills @ Lions: 11/24/2022 (L 28-25): They went punch for punch with Josh Allen on national television and made a name for themselves.
  31. Eagles @ Lions: 09/11/2022 (L 38-35): similar to 2021's week one game, they hung in against a far better opponent.
  32. Lions @ Falcons: 12/26/2021 (L 20-16): this is a clump of losses from 2021 that I don't really remember.
  33. Lions @ Browns: 11/21/2021 (L 13-10): this is a clump of losses from 2021 that I don't really remember.
  34. Lions @ Vikings: 10/10/2021 (L 19-17): this is a clump of losses from 2021 that I don't really remember.
  35. Lions @ Bears: 10/03/2021 (L 24-14): this is a clump of losses from 2021 that I don't really remember.
  36. Lions @ Steelers: 11/14/2021 (T 16-16): this game sucked. Goff was hurt but insisted on playing, which, nice. But he couldn't throw it more than like five yards downfield and IIRC it was pouring rain. But it cemented us not going 0-17, so that was good I guess.
  37. Bears @ Lions: 11/25/2021 (L 16-14): stupid Bears walking us off on Thanksgiving.
  38. Lions @ Cowboys: 12/30/2023 (L 20-19): higher than most people would have it. After the game I would have put this last. But it didn't end up mattering because the Cowboys choked against the Packers, and I think it ironically made the Lions America's team. Also a game cemented in Lions lore that you can ask any fan "where were you when Brad Allen ****ed us over on national television and then lied about it?"
  39. Seahawks @ Lions: 09/17/2023 (L 37-31 in OT): gross game against a gross team.
  40. Lions @ Broncos: 12/12/2021 (L 38-10): this was the week after Campbell's first win so everyone forgives it.
  41. Lions @ Seahawks: 01/02/2022 (L 51-29): gross game against a gross team.
  42. Dolphins @ Lions: 10/30/2022 (L 31-27): if I had known that we would go 9-8 and miss the playoffs by one game, I would have been louder at Ford Field this day. Lesson learned.
  43. Lions @ Cowboys: 10/23/2022 (L 24-6): gross game. Pretty sure we were decimated with injuries.
  44. Lions @ Bears: 12/10/2023 (L 28-13): gross game but with a team that should have performed better.
  45. Seahawks @ Lions: 10/02/2022 (L 48-45): I don't understand the infatuation with allowing 48+ points to Seattle can that stop this year please.
  46. Lions @ Packers: 09/20/2021 (L 35-17): gross game against a stupid team.
  47. Bengals @ Lions: 10/17/2021 (L 34-11): a blowout I remember attending. Not enough beer in Ford Field for this one.
  48. Lions @ Vikings: 09/25/2022 (L 28-24): this is really the only game in the Campbell era that I've looked back on and said "we should have won this game". They let Minnesota back into this thing late with defensive and coaching blunders.
  49. Lions @ Ravens: 10/22/2023 (L 38-6): gross.
  50. Eagles @ Lions: 10/31/2021 (L 44-6): a blowout I remember attending. Not enough beer in Ford Field for this one. And I got hit by a car after this game walking back to my car. Rude.
  51. Lions @ Panthers: 12/24/2022 (L 37-23): stupid Tepper and his stupid field should be doomed to decades of losing.
  52. Lions @ Patriots: 10/09/2022 (L 29-0): stupid Patricia.
  53. Packers @ Lions: 11/23/2023 (L 29-22): Ford Field was so ready last year to make this a statement game and Jordan Love had to come in and **** it all up by playing out of his damn mind.
  54. Lions @ 49ers: 01/28/2024 (L 34-31): no comment.

Well done. Yeah, it looks like you're ready for the season to start. We had our FF draft and I'm sad to say I didn't get nearly as many Lions as last year. It appears the word got out that they're kinda good...lol. Last year, I had Goff, Jaymo, Monty, Gibbs, St. Brown and LaPorta. Not so lucky this season, I only got Goff, Monty, Jaymo, Bates and the Lions defense. I see Jaymo as being a fantasy beast this season and the Lions D as being a top 5 defense. Seriously...

I was coming to post that MCDC commercial but didn't realize Bombers already beat me to it. Cool to see Dan in a commercial but feel like they missed something by having the joke be about covering your mouth so they don't steal your signs/order. Given that he is known for his aggressiveness and motivational skills you figure the commercial would center around something like that.

A server walks by and fumbles their tray and ASB catches it

Justin Rogers reported that he spoke with Christian Mahogany today and got the low down on his illness. Turns out it was mono.

That's got to have been a tough month for him.

The worst I ever felt was when I had mono as a 21 year-old.  Sometimes when your sick...you feel so badly you want to lie down because sitting up is too much.  I wanted to seep into the ground because lying down was too much.

Took months to fully recover

When I caught it, I ended up in the hospital for 3 or 4 days. Of course, that was in the 80's. These days, insurance companies would just send you back home.

I caught it in 82...my dad was a Dr so I just stayed home.  He said my lab work was so bad I probably should have been in the hospital...but he figured  he and my mom could keep an eye on me.

I was so out of it that the drive home from the lab that did my blood and urine samples took an hour and a half instead of 30 minutes because I kept getting lost in the city I grew up in

Not off season but pertinent

Leave his poor family alone

It’s behind a paywall so I can’t read but I have a hard time believing that Campbell actually said that quote.    The Lions history certainly doesn’t warrant anyone getting that upset over losses.   Definitely not toward the most beloved coach in franchise history.    He’s a funny guy so maybe he made a joke.  He’s making a lot more money and could’ve just wanted to move into a bigger mansion.
