"I will enter your home while you sleep, and sever your neck open." "I will kill your entire family." "Everyone you love will soon cease." "I will cut up your family." TigerNation
12 hours ago, tiger2022 said: I don't believe that someone followed a player home after a game to threaten him. Beforehand, that guy would need to know where the players park, what type of vehicle the particular player drives, and be able recognize that player out of uniform. That's a tough sell for me. The guy just followed him? .I would assume these players probably have garages that they drive in. How did the perpetrator get to talk to this player? Yet, the player somehow got threatened by this person and then didn't bother to call the police or beat the hell out of the guy? That's a tough scenario to believe. It's obviously just death threats on social media.

A player saying someone threatened them doesn't mean it actually happened. You might have massaged the first part of your post to clarify what you say above, but I do agree with your general point that, regardless of this particular instance, people sometimes exaggerate the presence of threats in a bid to portray themselves as brave in the face of mortal threats in a bid to increase sympathy. I see that in particular as a sad commentary on how our entire society has evolved to reward playing the victim to win points.
chasfh
I assume these gambling-related threats have escalated dramatically in the years following the Murphy decision, and I would guess that’s a combination of way way more people gambling now, which obviously includes the kind of psychos who would lodge threats against players et al; and the kind of incessant in-your-face marketing that casinos do suggesting that gambling and winning are synonymous, which maybe creates a sense of entitlement among people who don’t fully internalize that losing is also a part of gambling. 1776
As of this morning the Tampa Bay Rays are last in the AL East. I didn’t see that one coming. The Orioles just completed a four game sweep of the Rays at the Trop.

I assume that Boston "started" this with their Marathon Monday jerseys, which to me is very cool. The Boston Marathon is a huge deal and they always play an early game that day so it "connects" them with one of the things their city is most famous for. It was natural and organic. But when greed takes over and teams are forced to "connect" with their city then it fails.

RandyMarsh
Aaron Judge hit another HR today to give him 25 on the year and a projected 59 for the season. His current 217 OPS+ would project to be the best non Bonds MLB season since Mantle in 57. If he were to finish the season at that number he would join Mantle, Ruth, Bonds, Williams and Gehrig as the only MLB players ever to have a full season that high.(Soto hit that number in the COVID year of 2020) I hate to say this about a member of the Yankees but it almost feels like Judge has been a bit underrated when you factor in the historical numbers he has posted the last few years. He is putting up numbers that only Bonds can match in the last 60 or 70 years. Legit historical stuff.

And this is secondary, but it just baffles me to see a 6'7' 280 lb CF.
tiger2022
Imagine of Judge actually started the season hitting like he is now. Even the year he hit 62, he started off really slow. He was Javy Baez and most of the rest of the gang bad.

RatkoVarda
and NYY drafted Eric Jagielo with their 1st pick (6 picks before Judge), so even they did not know what he would be; MLB drafting is so difficult

I hope he causes more bigger guys to consider baseball. It's surprising (at least to me) that at some point along the way, Judge wasn't pulled aside by some coach and told that his future was at defensive end.
