That's great.  Now somebody do something about cutting down commercial time during college football games.

that would be difficult to imagine because the most important consumers in the country are watching CFB games.  All those dentists and insurance adjusters need to know about Gleem toothpaste!

I guess it does give me plenty of time to go to the bathroom, flip some laundry in the machines, take the vehicle for an oil change, grab a few sundries from the store, go to the bathroom again, and then sit back down to the game.

very few sports that I watch without time shifting these days.  Unless i'm watching with someone else.  Then its harder to do.

Where's the closest Sundry store?

How about we consider something beyond W/L? Like FIP, or ERA+.

Sure, let's look at ERA+. And we'll even cherry pick Montgomery's best 3-year stretch of 2021-2023. His combined ERA+ was 361.

Now let's look at Maeda. I'm not going to cherry pick his best 3-year stretch and will, instead, use the same time period (but going back to 2020 to account for his missed season in 2022). His combined ERA+ was 355.

Using FIP, Montgomery averaged 3.62, while Maeda's 3-year average was 3.71.

So I'm still not seeing why Montgomery is viewed so positively, while Maeda is universally rated as garbage.

I watched OSU and PSU at live time during the 2nd half.  I had forgotten how awful the commercial time was.

ERA+ is OK, although I do prefer ERA-, which goes in the same direction as ERA, meaning lower is better. It’s also directionally the same as FIP-, and makes comparing the two much easier.

Where the hell are the Rays going to play?

Are they actually thinking of sinking 9 figures into a stadium they are leaving in 3 years?

Can't take the roof off because there is no drainage system there and if you have ever been on the west coast of Florida - one thing it does in the Summer is rain.   Not for long, but when it rains it rains hard (great lightning shows too - at least there was in Naples when I lived there).

There was a recent Baseball America podcast that discussed many potential scenarios, recognizing that none were very ideal.

Ultimately, I think they have to figure out a local option—can you imagine this happening to the Tigers, and the solution was that they had to move out of state (or country) for a few seasons?

MLB wants them to play local-ish. So my guess is a spring training site, Lakeland, Disney etc. Miami apparently has too many scheduling issues with the schedule already set. They will just have to deal with rain at the outdoor sites.

A problem with the spring training sites/stadiums is seating capacity, as well as minor league schedules that have a team playing the same series Tues-Sunday, which provides very limited scheduling flexibility.  MLB schedules are already fixed for ‘25—I suppose MLB could put the burden on the minor league affiliate to accommodate this.  Or, use multiple locations—ie, Lakeland, Tampa and others in the vicinity to provide greater flexibility.

not my problem, though.

15 years ago, Vancouver’s CFL team needed a temporary place to play for 2 seasons while the roof of our domed stadium was being improved and the stadium renovated. Used a recreational football field in the east end of the city that had a seating capacity of 0. Parents would just stand along fences or the sidelines watching their youth play. So 27,000 seats of bleachers (some chairs, some long flat benches) were erected in 3 months for only $15mm. Then removed a couple of years later. Below is what the site looked before and after (upper pic) and during (lower pic).

Tampa doesn't have 8 k at normal games. Seating capacity wont be an issue

And MLb would have no problem pushing a single A team to a backfield for a season or two.

They’ve already decided to let the Athletics move to a minor league park for a few seasons.  So given the Tampa circumstances, why not allow the Rays to do the same under much less intentional consequences?   Sure, they’ll need to scale up some of the facilities to make a minor league more of a major league field.  But what are the other options?

Baseball forced itself into a bad look by allowing the A’s to **** around the way they did, and the Tampa thing is just adding to the bush league vibes.

The Tampa thing is more of a victim of circumstance, at least in the immediate short term.  I can understand not having a drainage system under a roof.  The roof ripping off due to a hurricane probably wasn't on anyone's bingo card.  I mean, I guess we've seen these kinds of flukes at other pro sports arenas.  But baseball is a unique animal because of the combination of how its played every day and the fact that there aren't spare arenas in other locations of similar capacities.  An NFL team could find another NFL park or a college park to play it.  The NBA/NHL could shift a team to another arena as well (the New Orleans Hornets to Oklahoma City).  I give MLB a bit of a pass for now, but as the offseason moves along, they'll need to get some kind of plan together.

Now, if you want to consider how long that franchise has been trying to get a new play pen, I'll agree with you there.  And that certainly applies in bolder font to the Athletics.

You’re right on all this, although I’m not talking about just the Tampa thing, which in isolation wouldn’t look so bad. In combination with the Oakland debacle, I think it has a multiplicative effect on how second-rate it makes MLB look. And you’re right, no drainage in a park specifically built for MLB is inexplicable. Or maybe not so much, I don’t know.
