papalawrence Posted January 15 Posted January 15 Sad Sam Jones was rumored to be a great teammate Quote
papalawrence Posted January 15 Posted January 15 Tracy Jones had a lot of talent and speed but not the right knees. Reds also had Kal Daniel's around that time- he would have been a star were it not for his knees. Tracy spent some brief time with the Tigers toward the end of his brief career. Quote
papalawrence Posted Thursday at 03:39 PM Posted Thursday at 03:39 PM Read a Sasaki article this am. Didn't realize he frequently tops 100 on the gun. I had heard about his devastating splitter. Given those pitching facts it's not a surprise that last year he missed time with shoulder inflammation. And in 2023 he missed time with an oblique injury. Sounds like TJ waiting to happen. Maybe the same is true for Jobe https://japantoday.com/category/sports/japanese-phenom-roki-sasaki's-mlb-deal-could-spur-chaos-in-latin-america.-here's-why Quote

Bumped into him when I lived in Tucson and attended Cleveland Indians spring training there. Bumped into Joe Garagiola too, and another time at the same ballpark sat behind James Garner, who was just enjoying a minor-league baseball game and he was exactly like you’d expect. The guy was the master of the “all you have to do is act naturally“ form of acting. Quote

I've told this story before but I once had a dream about Dave Dombrowski where I met him and was driving around with him Detroit, and he was dressed like Jim Rockord, had the same car he had, and the Tigers still played at Tiger Stadium. It was basically set in the 70's in Detroit and Dombrowski was Jim Rockford. My dad loved that show. 1 Quote

monkeytargets39 Posted Friday at 02:35 AM Posted Friday at 02:35 AM (edited) Thank you for everything Bob. I feel awful for diehard Milwaukee fans today. It’s just like when Ernie passed—a piece of your childhood goes with it. Those are big shoes to fill and hopefully they get lucky like we did with Dan. I remember reading a quote from a voter after that happened which basically went something like this: "What? Wow... I mean I didn't vote for him because he wasn't a first ballot HOFer, but he shouldn't have been dropped off right away." The idea of a "First Ballot HOFer" is dumb and I think definitely has had a lasting effect on Whitaker's HOF chances. Given that I don't think the "First Ballot HOFer" idea isn't likely going away I think they should adjust the rules with dropping players from the ballot. Not that anyone's asking, but here would be my rules: You need to get at least the same same percentage of votes as the years you've appeared on the ballot in order to remain on the ballot. This gives newer players an easier chance to remain around if they happen to either not be "First Ballot" worthy or if they happen to be on a ballot with a lot of really good players. But it becomes increasingly hard to stick around the longer you've been on the ballot as the reasoning you might be been overlooked initially becomes less and less realistic as time passes. Quote

He was still productive until the end, even though he missed games and battled some injuries. But we know why. Writers are vindictive as hell and they took it out on him for not talking to them very much. He just quietly did a great job for 19 years. Not flashy. He didn't need to be. I used to think that a big part of it was that he retired a year earlier than Trammell. If they'd both retired at the same time they would have been up for HOF at the same time and that would have been a bigger story. But after Trammell was voted in by the committee and Lou wasn't when they both could have been at the time makes me think it was more the petty writers vs. timing. Quote

Man, that game. The whole country got introduced to The Bird. It's so sad how it didn't last, but I guess the story wouldn't have have been as magical if we saw him slowly age. But even in his last years when he'd be around for interviews he was like a big kid. It's like he was the last of the wide-eyed kids to make it. So many of these guys now are pumped up so much by the time they get to the big leagues they are jaded at 25. Not this guy. That wasn't an act. It breaks your heart that he died so young and so oddly. Guy didn't have a negative cell in his body. Edited Friday at 08:55 PM by Motor City Sonics 1 Quote
