Vinson is a shooting coach and supposedly a really good one. Pelican fans are really upset he's leaving.

Not 100% sure it means anything for Monty or not. Langdon probably made this hire.

Exactly. Getting this guy was a huge win. One of the most respected and desired shooting coaches in the league.

I know we said the same thing about Dan Burke as a defensive guy last year and that dude looked at this train wreck and decided not to show up to work for "personal reasons", but seriously this is a great hire. He's credited with making shooters out of a lot of poor-shooters (Lonzo, Herb Jones, etc).

And like you said, it's a Langdon hire. I'm just curious why it's being reported as "Vinson being added to William's coaching staff". He's a behind the scenes guy, not an on-the-bench guy. I wonder if that wording is officially from the Pistons and they're just trying to pretend that the whole "Monty decision" isn't a thing, or is it just JEIII trolling the fans again.

Not an “on-the-bench guy”?  How is that possible?  Coaching staffs have half of a section in the stands reserved for games.

So are they hiring a GM before, ya know, the draft? I know they hired Blackstone as Langdon's assistant I guess? and the shooting coach but still no news on GM and coach and is now about a week away. Not off to a good start if you ask me.

There is no need for a GM with Langdon running things.

So Langdon is president and GM? Sometimes presidents hire GMs so I assumed that was the case here since I don't see GM in his title.

I think every organization is different.  Some have presidents, some have GM's, some have both.  More about responsibilities than titles.

Langdon was on a short clock because of when he was hired.  I imagine he has people in place now for the draft and free agency who will not be here this time next season.  After free agency is over I think he will start to evaluate everyone and decide who stays and who he replaces.

Maybe a better term is "front-bench". Those guys are the ones who the head coach hand picks as part of his crew. Usually they're tied to the coach and are cleared out when the coach leaves.

Then there's the developmental and health guys that sit in the back row (or don't even appear on the bench) and work with the players. Those guys are often independent of the coach and are more likely to stay with the team regardless of the current coaching staff.

Vinson falls into the latter category and was clearly a Langdon hire which is why I question the "joining William's staff" wording.

No reason. Langdon is the decider.

Think Scott harris. he didn't hire a GM for a year.

The CBAs, maybe especially in Basketball, have gotten so complex to navigate that I see a future with more teams slotting GM's as contract management specialists and team Presidents acting as primary team managers.

Teams have employed capologists for a while now.

I don't know anything about the Pistons anymore but in my amateur opinion when a guy doesn't want to coach and you throw that kind of money at him to have to entice him... his heart won't be in it.  And from what I read here and on twitter it sure seemed like it.

The Pistons' owner likes shiny things.  While they needed new leadership of the front office and head coach, I'm just not sure how successful they will be with current ownership.
