Maybe they waive one of the three they have on the roster and hope he sneaks through? Shows what I know..

I wonder sometimes if Yzerman looks back and feels he was brought up too early - even though he manifestly was not. It's true he may not have been a complete player when he came up, but he was still way too good a hockey player to be in the minors. Is Yzerman's stance that a player has to be 100% complete before he comes up? That's saying a player can't get better after he gets to the NHL and his own case denies the truth of that. I mean it's one thing if you think playing a rookie D in the playoffs is going to cost you a cup, but the Wings simply are not in that conversation that they need to be that conservative about guys making mistakes and learning on the job. buddha
what's the point of watson? are the wings so bereft of strength they sign a guy who does nothing but take penalties and occasionally facewash another guy? are we still that small and weak that we need a checking tough guy with no skill? isnt that why chairot is here? veleno is bulked up. ras is 6'6 for god's sake. edvinsson too. cant they take care of themselves? i mean, maybe not with the way teams take liberties with larkin all the time. still, its a bit frustrating to have an unskilled tough guy on the roster taking a spot from a guy who was picked 7th in the draft and actually did enough to MAKE the team. None of those guys will ever play with Larkin. If you need to defend Larkin you need someone on the ice when *he* is, like Messier was to Gretzky or Shanahan to Yzerman. Watson will never see the ice on a line with Larkin so he is useless for that. If you need Larkin to have space there is one obvious answer, you play Ras with him. Blashill actually did go there occasionally IIRC, but Lalonde doesn't. Probably because they don't have enough center depth. Which reminds me that while Luke is on the downside now,I could never figure why they didn't find a way to keep Glendenning for a couple more years at the time. buddha
ras isnt physical enough to intimidate anyone. he started to do it a bit two years ago but didnt do it at all last year. hopefully it was just the injury.

Mr.TaterSalad
Austin Watson had . . . checks notes . . . 4 points last year. We're giving a guy who guy 4 points in 33 games played, a roster spot? Had he played a full season he would have been on pace for about 12 points. Why the heck does Austin Watson have a roster spot over Mazuer or Kasper? This is Ken Holland signing Steve Ott all over again. Next thing you know Yzerman is going to come out and say we like our team, this is a men's league, and kids aren't the answer. gehringer_2
here is your answer. Every time I start to think the NHL might be growing up, I see something like this that confirms they still have one skate firmly planted in the Neanderthal era. https://www.mlive.com/redwings/2024/10/red-wings-pleased-with-physical-response-to-roughhouse-tactics.html Quote DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings sent a message during Friday’s chippy, physical preseason game with Ottawa that they won’t be pushed around, much to coach Derek Lalonde’s delight. They had to kill a seven-minute power play when Austin Watson stood up for Moritz Seider, but it was well worth it. “I like that. I think it energized our guys,” Lalonde said. “Obviously, Mo’s a very important player for us. We don’t want him to get in any of those type of situations. I actually liked it a lot.” The Red Wings don’t have an enforcer-type, which are rare in the league nowadays anyway. Klim Kostin sort of filled the role last season before being traded at the deadline. Watson, who’s in camp on a tryout, would be that type of big, physical presence to fight when needed if he earns a contract. He’ll be in the lineup tonight when the Red Wings wrap up the preseason in Toronto (7 p.m., no TV, livestreamed on detroitredwings.com). “It’s amazing,” Lalonde said. “Just one guy with that mentality helps the group out a ton. Up to that point, Austin was good in his game. He kills (penalties). He had a beautiful Grade-A chance on the back door, five- on-five. He’s done some good things with his play also.” Watson was ejected at 16:01 of the first period of the 4-3 overtime loss after roughing it up with Jan Jenik. He received 27 penalty minutes (instigator misconduct, aggressor, fighting, instigator minor). Players liked what they saw. “You want a guy like that on your team,” Christian Fischer said. “He’s well-respected around the league. He protects his teammates, and he does a really good job at that. He’s made one hell of a career out of it. Mo Seider is an all-star defenseman. He’s not doing those things you shouldn’t. Not only Austin, I think there’s other guys.” ....... “Preseason, I think it’s good to get those emotions back,” Fischer said. “Starting on Thursday, there’s going to be 82 games of that type of emotion. I think it’s nice to kind of get a little feistiness in the game and show kind of just that fire. We’ve had quite a few spirited matchups with that team and I would assume some more coming. “Obviously, nobody wants anybody to get hurt, but to get those juices flowing again. And I love our 23 guys vs. anybody else. That was fun to watch yesterday.”

Watson should clear and be brought back as needed. I am guessing Watson and Holl are being waved is to accrue salary cap credits while they are "in the minors" to start the season and both will be with the big club to start still. Doubt anyone claims Watson after Holl cleared. I will also guess that Watson is the extra press box forward which we wouldn't have wanted for Kasper....the problem is Berggren and I guess Veleno taking spots that could be there for Kasper. Oh well. I personally don't mind Watson, I thought he looked like a competent penalty killer in the preseason which surprised me, and he also made a nice pass to Motte for an assist. But mostly I hope he can keep the bastards like Brady Tkachuk away from our skilled guys.
