Tenacious D
Harris would have addressed either way. He’ll either be explaining his trades, or lack of. He did the same last year.

Even after giving every indication that he would NOT use his cellphone signal blocker, at the last minute Flaherty did use it to block Harris from being able to make and receive phone calls. It's Flaherty's fault.

Hongbit
Watch us all freak out about no activity and then have them sneak in something huge right before the deadline. Shoot, even a Skubal deal could still happen.

chasfh
3 minutes ago, LongLiveMaroth said: Montalvo is the get. #27 Pipeline midseason, #19 Fangraphs as of July 12. FG: 19. Joseph Montalvo, SP Drafted: 20th Round, 2021 from Central Pointe Christian (FL) (TEX) Age 22.2 Height 6′ 2″ Weight 185 Bat / Thr S / R FV 40 Tool Grades (Present/Future) Fastball Slider Changeup Command Sits/Tops 40/50 50/60 40/55 35/60 91-94 / 97 Montalvo has a very athletic drop-and-drive delivery with big hip/shoulder separation that may portend more velocity even though he’s a smaller-framed guy. He’s run a sub-3.00 ERA at every minor league level, including at High-A this year, because Montalvo’s command weaponizes below-average stuff that might keep improving. His fastball already punches above its weight because of its uphill angle, and Montalvo has feel for a long-bending low-80s slider that flashes plus length and will likely play plus at maturity because of his command. He also has a mid-80s changeup that flashes bat-missing tail, but it tends to have early action that puts hitters off the scent, and Montalvo uses it sparingly. Montalvo’s capacity for movement and lower body athleticism is exciting and makes me want to project on his stuff quality into his mid-20s. He’s thrown a ton of strikes in the low minors and stands a good shot to be a no. 4/5 starter down the line. He’s Rule 5 eligible this offseason and might be kept at High-A all year in effort to keep him off the Rule 5 radar. He’s more likely to be rostered after next season and debut in 2026, probably as a spot starter. Seems like a good get for a middle reliever. Motor City Sonics
I'd rather get nothing and keep Flaherty than settle for lousy prospects. If Harris & Greenie can't get someone that can help the Tigers in the next two years, then just keep him and try a re-sign. I have horrifying visions of Jose King, Dawel Lugo and Sergio Alcantara in my nightmares. Don't do that. Don't settle for warm bodies - make those other teams respect you. The Astros knew Franklin Perez was baked, but Al & his scouts didn't. Daz didn't dazzle and Jake's a fine backup catcher, but a fine backup catcher is not what you should trade a HOF player for. RatkoVarda
Pipeline Scouting grades: Fastball: 50 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 40 Born in Puerto Rico, Montalvo attended high school in Florida and became the Rangers' final pick (20th round) in the 2021 Draft. A former shortstop who stood out more for his athleticism than his pure stuff as an amateur, he has thrived as a full-time pitcher in pro ball. He transitioned from relieving in his 2022 pro debut to starting last year and logged a 2.83 ERA, .211 average-against and 107 strikeouts in 95 1/3 innings in Single-A. Montalvo's four-seam fastball sits in the low 90s and tops out at 95 mph, playing better than its velocity because of its carry and armside run and the extension in his delivery, and he's also developing a sinking two-seamer. His best swing-and-miss pitch is a low-80s slider with good depth. He also has nice feel for a fading mid-80s changeup that shows flashes of becoming a solid offering. An athletic mover who gets down the mound well, Montalvo combines quality extension with a low release height and flat approach angle, presenting an unusual look for hitters. He improved his control in the second half of last season, throwing more and better strikes. He profiles as a back-of-the-rotation starter and perhaps more if his stuff gets better as he adds more strength.

BoomGaspar
Imagine if this message board had existed in the days of Randy Smith. How many replies would have been on a thread about him swapping 2/3 of the team’s roster for 1/2 of the Astros’ roster, then immediately flipping several of those guys to the Padres, only to re-trade for them a week later? Or a thread saying “Hey everyone, we just got Fausto Cruz!” “Great! Who the &$!@ is Fausto Cruz??” Edited July 30 by BoomGaspar
