Soccer... the sport of the future in america.... and always will be

It’s more popular with kids that grew up playing it, which is pretty much the same reason baseball is dying (relatively).

the thing that baseball has in excess to other sports is not action, but tension. Tennis somewhat similar that way.

Maybe but I've been hearing this since 1982.

Soccer is like running.... would people partake in it if they were prevented from telling you they partake in it?  (I say that as someone who's main use of social media is to brag about my running)

i remember when beckham came to mls and everyone on the old site told me soccer would never catch on in america.  now mls is thriving.

i'll see you all this winter for the world cup.

Nothing wrong with MLB on the radio in the background whilst doing yard work or some other chore.

But even for this, it only works if you know the game well enough or had played it so that your mind is able to fill in the action from the description. A fan already knows well what his team’s DP combo looks like making the play so you don’t need to see it as much. Sort of the inverse of basketball or hockey where radio is harder because there is no set form to what is happening.

Soccer is a good first sport for kids to play because they can do it a younger age than most sports.  The basic movements are easy to do.  You can mix boys and girls and there isn't an advantage to one or the other.  The equipment is cheaper.

it works because nothing is happening for most of the "action."  basketball, hockey (and yes, soccer) have almost constant movement amd something is always happening.

baseball is a game of standing around for the most part.

It looks like something is happening in soccer until you realize it isn't.

soccer is much more exciting than baseball.

the best thing about baseball is that its boring and you dont actually have to pay attention.  put it on in the background and go do yard work...

I agree about baseball, fans know when to pay attention and when it's time to chat with your friends or grab something from the fridge.

Soccer (at least European soccer) is just dreadful as a spectator sport to me, not exciting in the least bit, and has very little to interest the mind.

Because my wife is from Spain, I have watched a fair amount of European soccer.  I think if they had more liberal ball-advancement rules it might be OK to watch, at least as a mind-numbing thing on the TV while I do something else...maybe MILS is better, I don't know.

Maybe soccer is like jazz.

Jazz: It's not the notes you play, it's the notes you don't play.

Soccer: It's not the plays that lead to a score, its about the plays the don't lead to a score?

Going off of my 13 yo son and his athletic friends none of them play soccer (They all play Baseball,Football,Basketball). The idea they like to say is the non athletic kids play soccer, they are also the socially awkward kids playing soccer, I dunno.
