Their offensive line isn't what it was 8 years ago, they have no receivers behind Lamb, Dwodle was decent, and Dak is the wrong side of 30 and has been slowing down with injuries. Add in the fact Jones is not a great GM, and it seems to be a pretty mediocre team. They are a very mediocre team but Ben should be able to improve everything they do on offense. The OL took a brunt of their injuries. I think they have a decent group but lack any depth. Finding a complementary WR shouldn’t be too hard as the talent pool league wide is very deep at WR. Tolbert wasn’t horrible and is still young. He had 7 TD this year. Quote
buddha Posted January 13 Posted January 13 cowboys are a pretty talented team but are very injured. that said, i dont think jerry picks coaches who could be successful because that will take the spotlight away from jerry jones. he takes milquetoast yes men who the rest of the league regards as mediocre, that way if the cowboys win jerry wont have to share the credit. ask jimmy johnson. maybe he'll finally change his ways? i doubt it but you never know, he's getting really old. it doesnt seem like a fit for ben johnson but none of us really know what he wants. he's interviewed with new england (young qb, stable front office, not a lot of talent on the team), the bears (young qb, average talent, stable but horrible ownership), the raiders (no qb, some young talent, no gm, terrible ownership...but tom brady), and jacksonville (youngish qb, some talent, potential gm roadblock, and bad ownership). there's no real pattern. everyone speculating on what he might do or want is just guessing. would jerry hire deion? he's not thought of as a football savant so that's ok with jerry, but he's also famous and would be the most spotlighted coach in the league. so not ok with jerry. if the pattern holds, jerry will hire someone obscure who he can push around. if it doesnt, he could look to ben johnson as the best candidate available. i wouldnt be surprised to see someone like jim caldwell turn up in searches. quiet, minority, not seen as a threat, experience, some success in the past. Hongbit Posted January 13 Posted January 13 My first choice for the Cowboys job would be Lincoln Riley. Unfortunately that’s probably not in the cards. I think Kliff Kinsgbury will be a popular name. Quote
Motown Bombers Posted January 13 Posted January 13 If Jacksonville would have canned Baalke, that would be the best job. Hire Agnew and Johnson. They have Lawrence, decent receivers, and maybe he can get something out of Etienne. Draft some lineman and they could have something. Quote

Realizing I didn’t name the Raiders, I think that’s where Ben goes, if he goes this cycle. But I’ll predict Pete Carroll to the Raiders. Ben will get his job eventually, but I think it’ll be a scenario where he can have his handpicked GM join him. I don't think Ben will go anywhere until the Lions win a Super Bowl. At least....I hope. I think people get hung up on the roster, but the Raiders may be a good option. Johnson wants job security and alignment from the GM. The Raiders fired their GM and will likely bring in Johnson's choice of GM. This would allow him to build the roster he wants. The Lions job was probably the least desirable when Campbell took it. he was completely in line with Holmes and had an owner who was patient and allowed them to build the roster. Johnson can have that with the Raiders. My biggest issue is that he will be in the same division as Ried, Harbaugh, and Payton. That's not going to be an easy division to navigate for the foreseeable future. Quote
RandyMarsh Posted January 15 Posted January 15 Yeah there's nothing wrong with Inheriting a bad roster so long as you have a GM/owner that recognizes the situation and allows you the time you need to build your team. The problem is people like Sheila are the exception, too often owners want immediate change and don't give you nearly enough time to turn things around. In that regard it does suck to come into a depleted roster. Quote
MichiganCardinal Posted January 15 Posted January 15 They can have Ben Johnson if we can have Maxx Crosby. Quote

That Martha would do exactly what her husband did when he canned Millen and promote next man up on the list in White. Not that hiring Bob Quinn worked out any better it didn't. But I thought when they interviewed Sheldon White after Mayhew was let go that he was just going to get the job. Quote
Motown Bombers Posted January 15 Posted January 15 If Stafford loses, is the narrative he can’t win outdoors going to be attached to him forever like it is to Goff? Quote
ben9753 Posted January 15 Posted January 15 If Goff wins a SB here and has a few more 4k yards seasons, is he going to the HOF? Quote

My overriding thought is that there are too many poorly sourced NFL reports provided by the entry-level enthusiasts who are to reporting what the Michigan Militia was to the Black Hawk Down era 75th Ranger Regiment or Spirit Airlines is to the Strategic Air Command during the time of Curtis Lemay. Sports_Freak Posted January 16 Posted January 16 Johnson or Glenn being poached really hurts the Lions in a new search for their replacements. All the other teams have a headstart with interviews and possible hires. Unless we promote from within, which I guess they will do. We can't let them guys poach us even more though, take all of our best assistants. Quote

I suspect it's partly a matter of the Lions being good now, but I find SOOOO suggested things in youtube especially with click bait headlines like "What the Lions just did will change everything." or "Breaking: The Lions just signed THIS player!" or "The NFL has no answer for this move by the Lions." Youtube finally seems to have realized I don't what this after I keep flagging them as "do not recommend." I think there's just so much "content farming" going on... just put something out there. Low quality, low effort, clickbait title/thumbnail just to get the clicks and ad revenue. They're not trying to be insiders, they're not trying to be quality content or building a fan base... just want the clicks. 1 Quote

We can't let them guys poach us even more though, take all of our best assistants. That's the secondary worry of course. I mean losing your OC or your DC (or both) will obviously hurt, but if you have a succession plan with one of your internal guys that will definitely help. I think we're all kinda assuming that Kelvin Sheppard is the Lions pick for DC if Glenn leaves, so I don't think Glenn would get a HC and then try to bring Sheppard as his DC, but maybe?? And even if he doesn't, if he takes people like Townsend (DBs) and/or Williams (DL) and/or Corrao and/or Hamilton (Asst. LBers), that means we promote Sheppard, then have to fill his slot AND any other vacancies left for people who left with Glenn. That's where the real 'brain drain' could happen. Sheppard (assuming all the scuttlebutt is true) seems like he would step in nicely as the new DC so there may not be much lost there. But if Sheppard not only needs to be the DC, but also needs to 'coach up' 3 or 4 or 5 new other coaches as well, that could take time. Now what if you have this issue on BOTH sides of the ball? 1 Quote
