sam darnold will turn back into sam darnold at some point.  i'd much rather have him on the vikings than matt stafford.  stafford is a much better qb.

but the vikes drafted a qb in the first round last year.  dealing their limited draft capital for an old qb like stafford doesnt seem like a solid long term move.

otoh, flags fly forever.

The team is 5-1 and Darnold has been playing very good.  They have beat some very tough teams including an away game at GB.  The only loss was to one of the best teams by less than a field goal.  Just don't think that is a good message to the team.  That is saying you think the record is better than your team actually is.  The Vikings should be very happy with where they are right now.  They do not have a tough schedule and unless they fall apart (and Darnold is a complete fraud for the 5 games against tough teams).  I think Minn is better with Stafford although they better think they can win the Superbowl with him as their QB otherwise your taking a huge gamble.  Then again, if in practice they don't like what they see out of Darnold and Jefferson agrees than maybe you take a chance and go for the SB.  It worked for Tampa with Brady with an older QB.  Just don't think its worth the gamble with where the team is.

The idea of replacing Darnold right now just feels like trying to fix something that’s working perfectly well.

If they want to get Stafford, they should do it in the offseason, to replace Darnold but as a bridge to McCarthy. I still think they could be the next landing spot for McAfee’s golden boy Aaron Rodgers. Complete the Favre trajectory.

I think there could be something there with Darnold. He has the physical tools but it was always the mental aspect of things that hurt him in the NFL.

Seeing how he started his career with the Jets and their horrible coaching staff and schemes he has some sorta excuse for those struggles. Maybe now that he has competent coaching and a good supporting staff the mental aspect of the game can catch up with his physical gifts.

Robert Saleh has “fluid” role with Packers working with offensive coaches

Disappointed it’s not the Lions, but being the Packers makes it so much worse.

Happy for Saleh.   I think he was actually doing a decent job with the Jets  (they were 4-3 with an awful QB last year at this time - a QB he didn't want?).   Everyone knows he got backstabbed by Rodgers and everyone knew that would happen the second they signed Rodgers.

The Jets and Panthers are great examples of how dumb it is to throw a rookie QB into a horrible team with little support.     Daniels in DC has a decent supporting cast.    Stroud in Houston had a good team in place (with the right coach).      Darnold is showing that now too.     Unless you have a really good team, the rookie QB needs to watch and learn.    I think Hendon Hooker has a better chance at being a decent NFL QB than Bryce Young does now.   It likely won't be as a Lion, but the Lions can end up making a trade and drafting another young QB to watch and learn from Goff.

Not a great head coach but he can be super dangerous in a role like this one.

Looks like he cam up a defensive guy... so I wonder if his role is telling the offense how the defense might respond to various things??

On two side notes:

  • I suspect Saleh is going to be a regular interviewee come the off season to appease the Rooney Rule.
  • If Saleh is not hired as a new HC and if Aaron Glenn gets an HC job... should we consider Saleh for the DC role or is it better to promote from within to keep the philosophy/scheme in place?

Lots of teams have a defensive guy as a pass game coordinator or similar. For the Lions, Townsend has that role.
I would rather keep it in house and develop our own coaches. Promote Kelvin Sheppard.

Saleh didn't need to get backstabbed. He shot himself in the face. You can’t bring in a Hall of Fame QB then complain about them using the skills that made them a Hall of Fame QB. “Maybe we need to drop the cadences.” Might as well have told Payton Manning that the OL was confused by his audibles or Patrick Mahomes that the OL can’t hold up while he’s scrambling.

heck of a no call on that last play.

Far worse than the one they called on Aaron Rodgers in 2015.

I'm sure Vikings fans will just take it as a given that they would go 80 yards and get a two-point conversion in 90 seconds without a timeout and then win in overtime.

McVay is way too conservative. He plays not to lose instead of calling plays to win. The Rams need one more 1st down to run out the clock but he'll allow the Vikings to have another possession.

I was watching that thinking about how the Lions never would have given the Vikings that ball back - especially not with 1:50 left - after converting the late 3rd down.
