And...we ruined Aaron Rodgers last season in Green Bay; This game was the game that changed the trajectory of the franchise. This was the game same old Lions died. The Lions have put good runs together in lost seasons before. This game was in a stadium they were 3-27 in in the prior 30 years. Rodgers was 15-1 in December and January at Lambeau. The Packers had everything to play for. The Lions then followed this game up with a win the next season at Kansas City. This was the game Campbell became Lionized, but not in the way we used to say it around here. 1 1 Quote

And...we ruined Aaron Rodgers last season in Green Bay; I don't think too many fans were upset by that run at the end of the season. I think most fans knew this team was on the right path regardless of their record. Plus they had a lot of draft picks already. I think that run sped up the rebuild by one year and no one would of wanted to play Detroit if they got in the playoffs that year. Where it gets frustrating is when a team like the Giants, Saints, Raiders, Browns win at the end of meaningless games and give up on a chance to draft their franchise QB. This happened so many times with the Lions and usually with lame duck GM's trying to keep their job. Quote
Motown Bombers Posted January 8 Posted January 8 The Lions have had a franchise QB for the past 15 years. There was consternation after winning at the end of 2021 and losing the number one pick to Jacksonville. The Lions still got Hutchinson and Jacksonville is still a poverty franchise. 1 Quote
Jimbo Posted January 8 Posted January 8 Yeah I think its easy to look back and say everything worked out. Lately it seems like the 1rst pick hasn't been the right pick. Jax could of went with Hutch. It did not work out like that in Lion's history. I guess though that is more of the who is making the pick instead of where the pick is. Still has been frustrating being a Lions fan all those years they would win at the end to miss out on a hall of fame player. Quote
Motown Bombers Posted January 8 Posted January 8 Holmes has been underrated on the players he chooses not to bring back. Golladay was a disaster for the Giants, and the Lions used the comp pick from Golladay for Kerby Joseph. Jackson is heading that way for the Rams. Fan favorite Jamaal Williams, in two seasons with the Saints, has 470 yards, 2 TDs, and is averaging only 3.1 yards per carry. The upgrade to Montgomery has been more substantial than most people thought, and it didn't cost much more. Quote

I love Spielman, but he has no executive experience in the NFL except for this current "special assistant" role. I'm not even really sure all of what he does here, but he's great, because he led to the hiring of Campbell and Holmes. It seems like Ray Agnew would be a more sensical target, but I have heard very little smoke around his name. 1 Quote
RatkoVarda Posted January 8 Posted January 8 I think there is some real risk that the Lions get raided at every level. Teams see how popular, praised and successful they have become and everyone wants a hit of that. 1 Quote

Yeah it would be unprecedented to hire a broadcaster that was a former linebacker as GM. 1 2 Quote

The flip side is, the Lions are a Super Bowl contender with an excellent culture and will attract the top coaches and executives in the NFL. Quote
Motown Bombers Posted January 8 Posted January 8 Keep in mind, the Jets hired Rick Spielman for their GM search. That probably explains why Chris is interviewing for the job. Quote

Holmes doesn't go after premium free agents. However, aging players who are still productive like Zeitler and Reader will sign with the Lions at a reasonable rate for a shot at the Super Bowl. Quote

We may see him go after a premium edge rusher, either thru trade or free agency. Sure, he hasn't gone after premium players in the past, but he was building a roster. Now that he's close, all bets are off. At least, I hope so. Miles Garrett isn't too happy in Cleveland...offer them some draft capital? Quote

I would interview Dorsey as well before Spielman. Quote
Motown Bombers Posted January 8 Posted January 8 I still contend that Dorsey is such an underrated addition to the Lions front office. This is the guy who drafted guys like Mahomes, Kelce, and Tyreek Hill and built the foundation of a Super Bowl dynasty. How goes to Cleveland and drafts Mayfield. Ward, Chubb and takes an 0-16 team to a playoff win. His issues have been working with head coaches which the Lions have not asked him to do. Quote
Motown Bombers Posted January 8 Posted January 8 So I just learned that Ray Agnew's son is a scout for the Jets. Quote

It wouldn’t surprise me if Woody Johnson just wants to interview Spielman to figure out what the secret sauce is. He was the first big hire Detroit made in turning around the worst franchise in the league. He has said before that he does not feel qualified for the GM role and it would surprise me if he was offered or took it. But I suspect Woody Johnson wants to know more about Detroit’s organizational structure. Quote
holygoat Posted January 9 Posted January 9 Perhaps Chris feels that he is now qualified to be a GM after working with Holmes for four years. 1 Quote
KnoxP Posted January 9 Posted January 9 (edited) With all this Johnson and Glenn talk, possibly taking coaches with them my brain sparked this; "I wonder if and when, years from now, people start talking about the Dan Campbell coaching tree". Still real early, do you think this will happen? Edited January 9 by KnoxP typo Quote

I'm not sure it would be a good move for a defensive-minded head coach like Macdonald to promote an OL coach to OC. I figured it would make more sense for Johnson to take Fraley with him, if Fraley wanted an OC job. Quote
