The question is...IF the Tigers find a SS in the trade market, are they willing to eat Javy's contract and DFA him?

I don't see it happening until well into next season.

I can’t see the Tigers eating that much money. At least another year before I could imagine them doing that.
But again, why does Hinch let this guy bat to lead off the ninth one run down! That’s not even managing. It’s like he had already given up. Inexcusable. The lollygaggers in the press should raise the question of what went into his decision not to ph for Baez.

We only have 3 healthy starting pitchers with little to no help in the minors. It would be irresponsible to trade a SP without any plan to replace him. 3 BP days every 5 days? Stretch out a RP? It's madness!

Depends on the timeline for Mize and Olson to return.  Sounds like Mize could be back at some point after this road trip if reports are to be believed.

but yeah the current injury issues really complicate what could be a very opportunistic deadline

The plan would be to:

A) Trade for a cheap backender at the deadline. There are SP's available at the deadline who are a crapload cheaper then what we'd get for trading Flaherty.

B) Stretching out Faedo or Brieske is not a criminal act. It's a valid option.

C) Jobe is looking ready for MLB. It's up to Development and whoever else is required for that decision but if they say yes, he's an option.

D) As crappy as Hurter and some of the other Toledo contingent are doing, they are still options.

E) This season doesn't matter. It's STILL an evaluation season, and the more critical goal, IMO, is setting up for next year. That means additional rookies called up to evaluate (Jung, Dingler, possibly Jobe and/ or maybe even Lee). That also means trading pending Free Agents. Including Flaherty. And there are ways to cover for traded SP's... even as dire a situation as we currently have.

PS: This too: "timeline for Mize and Olson to return."

Rogers, Ibanez, Madris, Malloy?  I’d probably go with Malloy there.  But it’s Clase on the bump.  It’s tough no matter what.

That may have factored into Hinch’s decision to let Javy hit. If he pinch-hits Javy and the PH struck out, all he’s gained is an out anyway and a pissed-off player. Plus, even a manager without a psychology degree is not looking for creative ways to embarrass his players. Hinch can’t always sit Javy and he can’t always pinch-hit him. Sometimes he’s just gotta trust him to do something.

Don’t worry, though, the games are low stakes anyway because we’re still rebuilding and so many of our guys are just hurt, so managing to make the playoffs isn’t a prudent way to run a team like ours in our state. Hinch has got to manage to finish the season and help the organization learn as much about what we have so they can go into October knowing what to plan for next season.

Yes, they will definitely do so at the first opportunity. If we trade Skubal and get Holliday, Javy is definitely not coming to Lakeland in February. Even with no trade, it’s still 50/50 at best.

By the way, the Royals are completely falling apart tonight after a **** call from the home plate umpire on a pitch that would have ended the game on a strike ‘em out-throw ‘em out double play with a 4-3 win. Since then they’ve given up five runs and are now down 8-4. So, see, the night is not a total loss after all.

I really don’t think Jobe is coming up this year under any circumstances. He has only 33 innings above A-ball, he’s not even in Toledo yet, and he’s walking guys like crazy in Erie. Even on the precipice of his 22nd birthday, he’s still not ready.

The Tigers’ last 5 losses have been by one run. The Tigers haven’t lost a game by more than one run since the 4th of July. They’ve played 16 games since then.

I know this frustrates fans to no end, but I like it. It’s a good sign that we are still competitive even when we lose, not a bad sign that we are incapable of winning close games or anything like that,
