2024 - 2025 Detroit Tigers Offseason

One more starter, one reliever and one right handed hitter is exactly what I expect the Tigers to get the rest of the off-season and they don't have to be free agent signings.  They won't necessarily be as good as Bregman, Sasaki and Yates.  In fact, that seems like an unlikely scenario.

Yep.  I’m sure Scott Boros came up with  fair market number and Bregman told him to no way that he wants more because he’s better than that.

A lot of risk and uncertainty to commit 7+ years and $200M+ to.  My heart wants him to sign, but my head says no.  Not sure where my spleen stands on this.

There is always going to be a lot of risk and uncertainty when you sign a good free agent.  If you ever want to sign a top free agent, you'll have to take that risk.  A lot if is timing.  Some people think the Tigers aren't ready to take that risk because they aren't yet in a position where one one player is necessearily going to make the difference.  On the other hand, they have two more years of the best pitcher in baseball, so maybe now is the time.

Agree with the risk, but it varies. Bregman wants to be paid like his best seasons, but he had a drop off last year and is 30.  Was last season an anomaly or sign of his decline?  The Astros moving away from him is pretty telling, in my opinion.  He was like a Whitaker of Trammell to that organization and they decided he wasn’t worth what he was asking.  They got the benefit of his best play, most of it during his arbitration, team controlled years.  And now we’re going to reward him for his decline? I wouldn’t make that commitment.

It's not our money. And it's also not like the Tigers would use that money to sign somebody else. Spend it on him or save it, that's our 2 options. As fans, we should want the Tigers to try to fill their needs with quality players. If it doesn't work out, at least they tried. And it's not like we got value from the last Miggy contract or the Javy contract.

At some point very soon, we will want to have the payroll flexibility to extend Skubal, Greene and Carpenter, among others, as well as potentially acquire future less risky free agents.  

Your second point is the reason that Bregman gives me pause.  If he deteriorates quickly, he’ll take an important roster spot and potentially block someone else.

I’d be more excited about him had he not shown signs of slipping in his walk year.

If he wouldn't have shown signs of slipping, he would have already been signed by a big market team. As for signing Skubal or Greene when they become free agents or extending them beforehand? They'll be walking before the Tigers spend that kind of money. That's why it's important to draft and develop well so we have replacements ready. Spend money or bank it, that's the Tigers 2 choices. And so far, they're saving it.

Yeah, we only have 184 2nd basemen in our organization. Maybe find a LH OF bat next? SMH....sign Colt to a very long term contract and then sign another 2nd baseman. Move Keith to 1st base, I guess?

He's been a minus 2B if you believe FG, and defense had been a priority of this regime, so I'm a little iffy on what his role is going to be, exactly. Maybe they see something we think we can fix, because I would be surprised to learn that Scott Harris is punting on defense just to get a somewhat above league average bat at 2B.

I don't see anything yet on our commitment to him, but FG pegged him at 3/54, and I think I might be a little surprised to see us committing three full years to him. He had a down year this year, so who knows, he may have taken 2/40 with a team option. Just spitballing on this.

The Tigers have needed a 3rd baseman ever since Harris took over and let Candelario walk. He got Vierling, a decent player but not All Star caliber. Another 2nd baseman in our system? Options around the infield? Maybe at 2nd base but we still need a RH bat for either 3rd base or RF. And SS is a question mark. We didn't sign Torres to fill a need, 2nd base was covered. We signed him because he was available. Let Hinch figure it out.

I think Torres can play any infield position. If he plays 2b, then Keith is 1b.

I'm pretty sure Hinch was 100% in on the deal and he and Harris already worked out the potential configurations before they signed Torres.
