Like moving Keith to first sounds good long term until you think of Bricenio who could maybe catch until you think of Lorenzo etc. Maybe a good problem ? Or too many musical chairs ? last year the Tigers were pretty good at run prevention once they got things figured out. I'd hate to lose that for the sake of 112 OPS+ career hitter. We don't know if Keith is going to master 1st, Torres is not good defensively, SS and 3B are still question marks. It may all work out fine, or it may turn out to be a GM over-shuffling the cards. 1 Quote

IdahoBert Posted December 28, 2024 Posted December 28, 2024 Just now, gehringer_2 said: functionally OK, I wondered about that because Hinch made a big deal about attitude at times and there has been talk about the clubhouse mentality or whatever you want call it changing if guys come in who are full of themselves and don’t mesh with the attitudinal gears already in play. I know there’s a tendency to think that something like this can’t be measured so it’s of no significance, but we’ve all been in situations where things just work better if there is a shared mentality. Scottwood Posted December 28, 2024 Posted December 28, 2024 Torres is a decent bet to have a bounce back year. I like the signing overall and kind of a creative way of addressing the RH bat problem. Ideally, we'd spend another $40 million to $50 million this offseason to get us more into the mid market size of payroll. We are also right in the sweet spot where adding a few extra wins in FA can be really beneficial. Skubal is only here for 2 more years so that is another reason to spend in FA the next two seasons. I'm hoping they sign either Bregman or Kim, another SP to a 1 year deal (assuming Sasaki turns them down) and at least 1 reliever on 1 year deal. That should be doable even within their budget constraints. Quote
romad1 Posted December 28, 2024 Posted December 28, 2024 This is that thread Quote Rucker Haringey of FanSided recently predicted the Yankees to swing a blockbuster trade for Detroit Tigers infielder Jace Jung to replace Torres in the Bronx Bombers' lineup. https://www.newsweek.com/sports/mlb/yankees-predicted-swing-blockbuster-trade-former-first-round-pick-2006396 Yankee fans want things. Hart Posted December 28, 2024 Posted December 28, 2024 Are we sure Tork is not going to get a lot of at bats at first base still as a platoon with Keith? I hate the thought of this. Keith needs to play everyday and get 600 ab's if possible. Quote

Carp is only a platoon guy. Today Jung is probably 3B (but hopefully Bregman and Kim still in play). Ibanez and Vierling are 3B/DH platoons for Jung/Carp and IF/OF backups. Sweeney the starting shortstop. Need a backup SS so prob Baez or a FA. That would leave only one roster spot: Tork/Malloy as another RH lefty masher or Perez/McKinistry if more defensive value needed. Possible one of these could also beat out Ibanez. Kim/Bregman would drop down Sweeney/Jung to bench options if they signed. Actually like Kim more than Bregman as I think he helps this roster more. Keith might be an everyday guy. I guess now that I think about it, he was one of the LH bats that seemed to get more time vs LHP than others. Whether that’s by design or necessity is debatable. Quote

I'd be pretty concerned with life if I were Spencer Torkelson tho... Hope for his sake he put his $8 million to work for himself. Quote

McKinistry, Jung and Malloy also in that mix. Tork is so one dimensional he would be least likely of that group to make the roster IMO. It is very interesting. I guess if I had my way the infield would be Keith - Tork - Torres - Sweeney - Nagvitago - Jung But I think they will start Jung at Toledo in 2025, even if he has a great ST. With thes infielders on my list......... vs. Right Keith 1b Torres, 2b Sweeney, ss Jung, 3b Carpenter, rf Meadows, cf Greene, lf Rogers c Tork dh vs. Left Torkelson, 1b Torres, 2b Navigato, ss Vierling, 3b Perez, rf Meadows cf Greene, lf Rogers, c Whatever Matchup Works, dh Rogers & Dinger would platoon based on when Rogers needs a rest Torkelson's future here is very murky. I am sure they are probably trying to trade him, but they probably wouldn't get much in return right now. Hanging onto Baez seems so stupid at this point. I just don't get it. Just admit the mistake, pay him and send him off, he's only in the way now. I hope he stuns us all,. but it just seems pointless now. Quote
Tenacious D Posted December 28, 2024 Posted December 28, 2024 I still say it’s too early and unnecessary to cut bait on Tork. Let him come to ST and play in Toledo to see if he can make adjustments. Dude had 31 dingers a year ago—no reason to punt yet. Quote

That's what I believe, but everything seems to be pointing to this team moving on, unless they think that it might have some sort of psychological effect on him, but I don't see a major league team making a bunch of moves just to put pressure on one guy. First it was telling Keith and Malloy to learn first base, now the Torres move. He's capable of 30 HRs, there some sort of disconnect somewhere. If they can reconnect it, he's a great part of the lineup. They fixed Parker Meadows, why not Tork? Quote

Tenacious D Posted December 28, 2024 Posted December 28, 2024 I think Bregman signs with the Tigers over the next 72 hours. Terms are 6 years/$192M. Player opt-out after two seasons. 1 Quote
Klondike Posted December 28, 2024 Posted December 28, 2024 (edited) I still don't want to give up on Torkelson. I could see him going somewhere else and hitting 40 dingers. Remember Carlos Pena. Same situation Edited December 28, 2024 by Klondike Quote
