Of course, as long as he didn't cost much. 😄 Sure, they could add him for depth, but they shouldn't plan for him to be a starter Quote

IdahoBert Posted January 5 Posted January 5 I’m getting bored of waiting for something to happen. I watched the dreamy and inventive slap stick animated B/W 2022 silent film ‘Hundreds of Beavers’ on Prime yesterday and it was not boring. It was independently financed for $150,000 and everybody’s wearing beaver, raccoon and bunny suits and the graphics are like in silent films. It’s 1hr 42min long and it never drags. It even contains Rube Goldberg chain-reaction machines. And yes, there’s buzz saws and snow. 1 1 Quote

What if Torkleson gets his act together and Keith is deserving of playing time? Torres has a kicker in his deal if he gets traded, but so what. Pay it, move him, and play the guys with a future in Detroit. Ideally I think that’s what we should be hoping for as a best case scenario. All 3 prove/reprove themselves as major league hitters, another team needs a guy like Torres, and the Tigers get Torres’ production through that point and can get a prospect of some nature for him before losing him to free agency. 1 1 Quote

The flip side is that the Tigers could QO him. That was what I meant when I earlier said "unless". What if he does so well with Detroit, and the brass fall so much in love with him that they offer him a contract? I don't think they will. And all he has to do is turn down the QO, sign with another team, which would garner us a draft pick, so, in your scenario... any return on a trade would have to exceed the "perceived" value of that draft pick. And all he has to do is perform, and then turn down that QO... Unless... Quote

If I'm the Tigers, I don't think I want to give him a QO, I really don't want to give him one and risk him taking it. So better to move him at the deadline for whatever value you can and let his new team worry about the year after. Who know what the exact circumstances might be next August that might chance the perspective - he might all in love with Detroit (as unlikely as that seems) but at least right now, I think he's a candidate to finish the season somewhere else. I don’t see this heading towards a qualifying offer. But I didn’t see a playoff run right after trading Flaherty, so what do I know. Quote

We may be in August and he's the only hitter we can rely on, or the offense might be the least of our problems and he's got 25 errors. Still, better to manage by having a plan and changing it as needed than just coast along making random moves.... Quote

I'm not down on Lee so much as I think he won't be able to wrest 2B away from Torres... Or Jung. I think Jung will end up at 2B. I believe Lee is not the most athletic guy either. So it's not like he has a fielding advantage there over anyone else. But I DO believe he has a legit bat... That means finding ways to get him into the lineup... Which means... I think they give him some time at other positions as a way to get him into the lineup more. He's played 3B some. And some OF previously. But with so many LH'ers on the team... it'll be on the short side of any platoons... Quote

Lee still has to get through AAA and Torres is a transient - I don't see a lot of potential collision there. Jung maybe is more in his way. - esp if they manage to land Bregman. SoCalTiger Posted January 6 Posted January 6 I heard somewhere that Lee seems to be injury prone or most seasons he spends prolonged time on the injured list. Quote

He has been injured the last two seasons. Same as Greene and Carpenter. Not a reason to discount him. The fact that he is a RH bat, and the success he had last season, makes me think he’ll be in the mix, or a valuable trade asset. I’m not convinced that Jung will be better, but it would be a nice problem to have if they are both raking. 1 Quote

The holidays got in the way and I never continued this conversation. The "have some fun with it" was in reference to fans, like me, who bring this up. But I bring it up because Verlander, at least, compares favorably to somebody like Alex Cobb. They both stunk in 2024. But they were pretty similar in 2023 (Max was a little behind but not too far). So if that is the type of guy the Tigers are looking for, yeah, it appeals to me to bring back Verlander. And if we think Fetter & Co. can coax more performance out of Cobb, why do we not think that about Verlander or Scherzer? I don't really expect that it's going to happen, but I like the idea. 2 Quote
Tiger337 Posted January 6 Posted January 6 (edited) I hope something else happens with their starting pitching. They went the whole second half with one starting pitcher and all they've done is add Alex Cobb. Cobb is not a bad signing, but he seems like a big health risk. They are also counting on Olson being healthy which is also questionable. Edited January 6 by Tiger337 1 Quote
