Now this is a terrible thing to say about high-level athletes. No way are they drinking champagne.

It’s protein infused champagne.

If they have't extended Skubal by now I think the odds are he's gone when his deal is up. It's just cooked into the current system. To me that's just a base assumption you have to accept

Riley is a tough call, between his style of play, the injuries he's already had and the brutal way he torques his back on his swing I'm guessing they they still have a measure of 'wait and see' in any plans to extend him.

Agreed on both.

And we don’t know what they want personally either.  Skubal is from the Paciifc time zone area, maybe he’d like to be out there.  Isn’t there a team in Los Angeles that has beaucoup buckaroos?

I want to see Greene get through a season healthy.  And who knows, maybe he’s got designs on being elsewhere, too.

There are two of them. Or at least two with "Los Angeles" in the name.

Yeah, well, one is throwing cash around like an athlete does on hookers, blow, and protein infused champagne.

They have both thrown a bunch of cash around—Josh Hamilton and Albert Pujols and Justin Upton in the past, also Trout and Rendon, a very average Kikuchi just recently. They have no problem spending Arte's dinero. Of course, only a couple other teams can even dream of keeping up with the Dodgers, and the Angels ain't quite one.

Reminds me of Keith Richard's comment when asked how he could be near bankruptcy  after earning so much $ with the Stones " Well, he said, I spent quite a lot on drugs and women and wasted the rest ".

the Tigers Minor league guys talk to  Scott Harris

Harris nerded out in there pretty good. I thought they did a good job getting him to discuss things other entities haven't gotten out of him.

Skubal came in higher (+2M) than predicted. Not sure if anything can be read into that.

Skubal has been fantastic.  I’m glad they aren’t nickel and diming him.  Hopefully it will be a great final two years with him here.

It was interesting to hear him talk about trying to get guys who were having success in the minors to fix things before they  were exposed at the next level, holding back Madden because he hadn't, and then thinking about the contrast to Torkelson, who the previous regime kept promoting on the basis of his ability to hit the long ball without ever forcing him to become a better hitter. I also wonder if Torkelson is or is not in the group of guys who he referenced as 'coming back' from their private coaches to more reliance on the team's people.

A name I wouldn’t mind seeing us bring in is Tommy Kahnle.  Considering Breiske and Vest have power fastballs, it’d be a good mix to have a changeup specialist in the pen too.  He’s on the older side but that means we could probably get him on a shorter or cheaper deal.

I’m wondering whether Harris is strongly considering how injecting a veteran with a big money contract is going to affect that balance. We had a team making the playoffs last year that was literally half rookies. All the big money guys we had signed for the season—Baez, Flaherty, Maeda, Canha, the $10+MM guys—were all either hurt or traded by the time the Tigers started really winning. The team that went 31-13 to finish the season were a bunch of kids cobbled together mainly through the draft, waiver wire, sell-off deadline deals, and MiLB FA signings. There was a magic in the way they all came together to win together.

Do you think Harris is considering the way a big money veteran will affect the way the team works together? Or do you think he’s, like, throw everything he can into win now and worry about tomorrow tomorrow, he might not even have a job after next year?

I am sure he is considering that and would want to bring in someone who he thought worked well with young players.  He also surely realizes that team chemistry is not always sustainable from year to year if you don't have enough talent.  Hinch actually suggested that in the inerview with him and Harris early in the off-season.

I have been wondering for a bit now if Harris is quietly having conversations with the Boras/Bregman camp in search of a more amicable deal.
Last year Boras had to give some with several of his clients when the market turned quiet after the new year. (Chapman/Montgomery/Snell)
This theory of mine is about a week old but it’s starting to grow on me. I can’t imagine that he’d consider this team to be much improved at all, as is, from last year’s team.
The other option is a formidable trade with another team. That was my initial expectation early on but I’m not as sure of that now based on Harris’ record as a POBO/ GM.

The internal improvement is a huge wild card. Is second half Parker for real? Can Trey Sweeney improve by a step or two? Can Colt Keith move up a notch or two with the stick? Can Jace Jung put it together at third? Can Casey Mize and Spencer Torkelson find whatever it is the whole world thought they had when they went 1-1? Is there another Tyler Holton lurking on the 40? Those might be the kinds of considerations that are going into Harris’s thinking as he’s considering roster additions from outside.

I’d be surprised if Harris threw more than three years at Bregman (or if he signed Santander at all), and I’d be equally surprised if Bregman wanted to stay in Detroit more than a year anyway.
