Do other fan bases hang onto their aging stars the way Detroit sports fans do? If Harris/Hinch thought Verlander would help the team more than Cobb would, he'd be a Tiger. I want my FO making decisions based on what they think makes the team better as opposed to feel-good fan service.

I always wonder that too...the Tigers always seem to be celebrating 68,84 or a player on one of  those teams

My son and his family lived in the Bay Area several years pre-Covid and enjoyed it. He and his family fell in love with the A’s. Green & Gold apparel everywhere. Going forward he decided to go full time with the Giants at the end of last year with the departure and destruction of the A’s. He is now stoked that Verlander will be wearing the Orange & Black this year.
Our visits to the area were very enjoyable over the several years they were out there. We managed to see games at the Coliseum and Oracle on separate visits. His buddy sent him a clear vial of infield dirt from the final Oakland A’s home game this year as a Christmas gift. That’s what you call a true friend. They use to attend games together in Oakland frequently.
But alas, his wife has decided to be a Dodgers fan and his oldest a Braves fan. The diaspora of MLB allegiances can be a difficult family chapter.

Did a family trip to the area this Summer.  Crossed the Bridge everyday from the gilded suburbs by Muir Woods NP where the wife picked out an insanely awesome VRBO house.  I can definitely see the appeal if you have cash.   We were mystified by the economy of the boutique town of Mill Valley.  I would put our drive down to Monterrey and back on the PCH as a bucket-list quality drive.

Because this is a great album and a great drive combined: enjoy

When your team has only won four World Series over 120 years you have to hang on to the memories that are there.

I would say the franchise has a deficit of championships for our history.  Not as bad as Cleveland or as agonizing as the Lions draught but still...come on, lets get another.

I have a hunch Harris did kick the tires and JV declined. As others posted, he is all about 100% focus. In det he would have reporters in his face constantly with the same questions about "returning home." Maybe we'll never find out.

Another issue may have been this current squad finally took steps to forge an identity. JV would have been bringing the past era that was a great era, but long gone. The rebuild has been beyond frustrating at times. Hopefully the team continues to build on their new identity and get back to work, starting in about 6 weeks

Who are we really gonna celebrate from 90-06?  Jeff Weaver?

16 years between '68 and '84. It seemed like much longer at the time. But it's going on 41 years since '84. A lifetime...

Big Cecil, Travis Fryman, Randy Smith for teaching us that you can indeed trade half your team for a player, Juan Gonzalez, who didn't want to be here from day one.

Not to mention he would be an inflexible element to a team that requires absolute flexibility.

the dominance of the yankees really distorts this.  the tigers arent that bad when you consider the competition.

yankees 27, cards 11, red sox and A's 9, dodgers and giants 8, pirates and reds 5.

then the tigers.  ahead of the cubs and sox, orioles twins/senators, and indians.

the tigers really havent had a dynasty.  the closest was the greenberg/gehringer teams in the 30s and 40s who had 4 world series and 2 titles in 11 years from 34 to 45.

other than that its really been one offs.  68 and 84.  those teams never achieved dynasty status because of the yankees and the 80s group underachieving.  the other group was the cabrera/verlander teams that never won it all and probably underahieved, especially 2013.

i guess the cobb teams of 07-08-09 could also be a mini dynasty.  but they got caught up with the A's and then the ruth yankees toward the end of cobb's run.

Ty Cobb, a half century after the fact, at the 2:45 to  5:00 talks about a key game in the 1907 pennant race being his most tremendous thrill in baseball.

1984 and 1968 have been marketable in the lean Tiger years. It's that simple.

That's not what I mean. I speaking specifically of the great desire for past stars to come back and retire in Detroit.

Agree, I’m sure you would agree that doesn’t mean the team should make roster decisions based on fan nostalgia.

You’re perfectly right as a fan to be disappointed that JV won’t end his career here in a Tigers uniform. I liked him when he was here, too. But I also like that Harris is leading us from that era, which is long, long over, into a new one led by today’s and tomorrow’s stars, not yesterday’s stars.

If I had to guess what one big consideration would be, based on everything I’ve read about JV over the years, it’s that Harris would not want a player like him coming into and acting like a huge ****ing prima donna in our carefully-constructed young clubhouse—especially a guy who’s old, hurt, and not pitching even halfway decently.

Detroit Tiger fans have been conditioned to live in the past. As such, they live too much in the past. Not to mention the fact that most Michiganders have a deep seated inferiority complex. They are ravenous for the social acceptance by the cool kids from NY and LA.

Having Verlander retire here would subconsciously affirm some love from their idol.

It's long past time to move on.

Yes, especially now when they have a legitimate chance to make the playoffs with a couple of acquisitions.
