I think ST will be as important for Mize as for Torkelson. He will start the season pitching where-ever his performance merits, which could be anything from the rotation to the pen to Toledo.

Just now listening to Tiger Territory re: the Flaherty signing and Cody Stavenhagen says he is getting a lot of optimism from Tigers about Bregman situation.

I don’t understand all of the Mize hate.  He was serviceable last season, coming off TJ and major back surgery.  I do think his time could be running short, but I’m anxious to see how he does this season.

Casey is frustrating because the big arm is there, but the pitching skills to get the most out of it have yet to come around. He'd be in a stronger position if his pitching had improved as last season progressed with distance from the injuries , but it didn't seem to, and he was another step worse when he came back after the hamstring, which I thought was just an add insult to injury king of thing. How do you pull a hamstring coming off the mound for a pop fly?

Concur that we can't really judge year one TJ stats.  He should be closer to what he was expected to be after more healing.

Just listened in as well. Yeah, I think the vibes on Bregman are warming up.

Mize is different from Torkelson because Mize is considered highly intelligent and coachable.   Torkelson is TBD in those departments.

Well maybe. He may be coachable but he has never had good mound presence and is too prone to emotional meltdown. It's a performance business and In the end intangibles take a back seat to getting the job done. I root for the guy, but just my IMO,  I will be more surprised than not if he makes the starting rotation.

I guess I’m jumping on the bandwagon kind of late about all this. I’m sort of like the old man yelling at a cloud about all this. I have no particularly keen insights into either Flaherty or Bregman. It does look like the team is willing to pull the trigger to some extent to run with the big dogs. Both these guys have some ifs butts and howevers attached to them. But if the kids blossom as hoped this could be a nice year.

I'm practically on the complete opposite end of this: Mize is not factoring into my thinking about the 2025 Tigers even a little. It's like he's not even on the team to me.

I could see Bregman signing a very similar contract now. Whatever it is—two, three, four years, whatever—I think it will have an opt-out after each year.

That's how I am with Manning, with Mize I still have a sliver of hope.

For awhile I have wondered if moving Manning to the pen made sense. Tell him to forget trying to pace himself as a starter, just air it out as a reliever. With all the injuries last year that wasn’t such a good idea, maybe with a deeper staff it would be more reasonable.

I agree with the logic of this as Matt's success seems so directly tied to his FB velo. It's one of the more counter-intuitive things that with Manning's frame and this coaching staff's smarts that they can't get him over 95mph. You kept waiting for it to happen but it just doesn't seem to be in there. Then again, at 6'8" Doug Fister couldn't throw harder either.

I see him as depth.  They need about 10 serviceable or better starters.  He's one of them.

I'll believe it when I see it. In the meantime, he might as well be Austin Bergner. 🤷‍♀️

I think the most likely scenario for Mize is if he can at least get good command of a slider and FB, he can be a serviceable reliever against RHH and in shorter outings maybe he keep his frustrations more in check. You know he wants to start and that means getting command of three pitches, something we have yet to see him succeed with.

The fun thing is that a strong off season means they will go from a odd or even die (1d6) roll chance of winning on a given night to anything a 3 or better on a 1d6 roll.   It beats the crap out of only having a 2 in 6 chance of winning on any given night.  Or 2003 where they had to roll a 6 to win.

Why not both?  I believe they will still have around the league average payroll if they sign him.  It's still probably not happening, but I don't think that's because of Flaherty signing.

Not greedy ? Not sure illitch will spend more and don’t think they sign Jake ifBregman was probable ?
