Congratulations to 2025 All-Star starter Alex Faedo.

I've been waiting for them to make a move to shore up catcher behind Rogers other than Dingler, but this kid is 20 in A ball so he's not that guy. Went to Australia to play this winter - certainly shows some ambition.

We used to have a thread that counted down the days until spring training. But you mentioned 3 weeks so I'll go with that since I have no idea of the actual remaining days;

OK, here is a completely wild contract idea that I’m sure no one’s thinking about and would never be offered. But tell me whether do you think this doesn’t make sense, and then tell me why not.

Offer Bregman 6/180. Front-load it to be 40 in each of the first two years, and 25 in each of the last four. Give him a player option after the first year, and give us a team option after the second year. If Bregman declines the option after year one and the Tigers exercise the option after year two, the last four years become guaranteed.

This gives Bregman a super high salary for this season, and if he slays, he can opt out and try his luck on the market again. We will have gotten a tremendous season, and we can keep our current prospects in the wings to try again in 2026.

If Bregman does poorly enough to not exercise his player option, he could come back for another year, and if he slays, we can then pick up the rest of the contract guaranteed, and if he doesn’t, we can let him go. It would have to be basically an All-Star season in year two for us to pick it up. Then I feel like we could get close to pretty good value from him for his remaining years here at the price of 4/100. I doubt he’s going to have a Javy drop off because his skill set is much more solid than Javy’s was when he came here.

This won’t happen, of course, but tell me why this won’t work.

just one question: has a Boras client ever signed a contract with a team option? Serious question - I have no idea but I think it possible the answer is never, and if that's the case that would be your answer.

I do like the idea of front loading contracts such that the salary and expected production are more in line with each other over the life of the contract on an aging player.

I think the Boras four all had opt outs last year didn't they?

There's some weirdness in Flaherty's AAV that could lead to quite the discount next year due to the "Valley Charge."

Might come in handy if the Tigers might be pushing close to the CBT next year, which they might with a Bregman signing or a signing or two next year. Greene hits arbitration. Skubal hits Arb 5.

Long story short, Flaherty's AAV this year will actually be 27.5M, with next year being his salary minus 7.5, meaning if he declines, the Tigers get a 7.5M discount on their AAV calculation. (I'm awaiting confirmation on what happens if his contract incentives push his option year up to 80%, thus wiping out the valley tax)

This contract could be signaling that they are planning to be considering the tax next year.

A lot of money and effort for a guy who has not hit in Comerica in his career.  The Astros are laughing—they got max value out of his arb years when he was at his best.  Now he’s on the decline and wants to be rewarded for his best seasons past.  There is a reason the Astros moved on from him quickly.

F him.  Let him continue to decline with some other team.

Could it be the $20 mil option if he gets 15 starts is actually 19.75 mil (or 19.99mil) to stay under 80%?  (Or this year is $25,000,001?)

We already it’s not going to happen for that and other reasons. I’m looking for logical flaws if you have them.
