Yeah the thing about h/r splits is that in general players tend to hit better at home regardless of their home park. Quote

It's all about money and trying to maximize it. In that sense, Bregman/Boras could also be leveraging the Tigers to up whatever they have on the table as well. I myself don't buy the "one dollar more" argument, but agree to disagree. I believe MLB insiders when they say players don't want to play in Detroit in part because Detroit, because the idea easily passes the smell test, and I think anyone can easily see that, even if they don't want to admit it. I don't like admitting that, either, but it is what is. Quote

I think it's true enough that for *some* players salary is just as competitive to them as the games are - so sure, they are out to get every dollar to prove how good they are, but I don't think every player is like that by any means. Some will give up dollars to play on a better team, some will give up dollars for term, some will give up dollars over family issues, and absolutely, there are some guys who do or don't want to play in particular places - but the bottom line is I don't think you can generalize about any of it. It’s probably true but in reality is there really that much difference in Detroit and Cleveland, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, St. Louis, or KC? They all feature smaller downtowns and many nicer suburbs. Quote
Toddwert Posted Tuesday at 09:30 PM Posted Tuesday at 09:30 PM way would Bergman want to go back to Houston when they are clearly on the verge of rebuilt and Detroit is a team on the rise? where does he have a better change at a WS houston or Detroit?... maybe thats a big factor that we arent talking about Quote

Back in the day when guys made a lot of money but not such stupid money, Det and maybe Cle had some advantage because of the greater water side recreational potential - if you think of a guy like Gibson - he really loved it here even after having been in LA. But for a higher level FA today, the money is going to be so stupid large that they can charter a lear jet anytime they feel like a fishing trip. Quote

It's not that I believe Detroit will never get any top free agents ever again, but I do think it will take some years and an overhaul of the reputation of the Tigers organization to start seriously competing for them. monkeytargets39 Posted Tuesday at 10:11 PM Posted Tuesday at 10:11 PM Most players would be willing to come to Detroit….for the right price. Most of them aren’t worth that price though. Quote

If a hypothetical player got offers of 5/120 from the Dodgers, 5/125 from the Yankees, and 9/250 from the Tigers, I'd bet they'd take the Tigers' offer (with early player opt-outs, of course). Sure, they could live in Detroit six months a year for that. The old man is dead, though, and ain't no one getting that kind of offer from this team. Not this offseason, anyway. This really is nuts, and not grounded in any sort of reality (that can be proven). There are the Los Angeles Dodgers and then there is everyone else, which lumps Detroit in, too. No sure if you got your ass kicked in Detroit, or just had your lunch money stolen, but not everyone shares your dim view. Quote
