Oh look... another few days of Bregman not being the main topic of everyone's news story and another "leak" comes out that Bregman has a 6-year offer from another team other than the Astros that he's sitting on.

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2025/01/alex-bregman-reportedly-has-six-year-offer-from-club-other-than-astros.html

Surely this is true and not just an effort by Boros to get teams to up their offer, right?

Not to be an ass, but what does that mean? It's pretty self explanatory.... I gave average and On base percentage.....

And you had no basis of comparison for what the MLB average actually is.

You said the Tigers only have two average to above average hitters.

Meadows, Vierlong, and Torres were all average to above average hitters last year, and you just magically decided that they weren't.

Not sure what to believe anymore, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this were true.  I suspect Alex wants to go back to Houston and will wait that out until he’s forced.  I don’t see the Tigers pivoting away from him  with external options—the fallback is likely Jung/Vierling, so the Tigers can wait this out, too.

The Paredes back to Detroit idea is interesting.

He apparently made a statement saying he would rather die than play for a foreign county.  I think it was a political statement rather than a baseball statement though.

Harris on Faedo:

“I told Alex this is a really difficult move for us to make,” president of baseball operations Scott Harris said. “Alex is a really popular teammate in the clubhouse. He’s gotten some really big outs for us. It’s a move we really didn’t want to make, but our 40-man [roster] is getting more talented these days and anytime you add a new player to the roster, it generally means that it costs you a valuable contributor on the back end.

“Again, I think Alex has been a really talented pitcher and has gotten some big outs for us, but I think his out-of-options status made it a little bit more difficult of a fit on our roster here.”

I guess he doesn’t get out much.

So they didn't think he would make the team, which is a shame because he probably would have done less damage  in the last pitching spot on the roster than Maeda will do in that spot before they finally have to release him. I think any sports team management that could truly get itself past the sunk cost fallacy would probably be good for another 5% on their winning percentage on that basis alone.

Especially since he's not even arbitration eligible yet. Giving up four years of control of Faedo for one year of Maeda. Could come back to bite them when someone picks him up.

Guys, Faedo isn’t good. Scott is being nice.

But when cuts come, the question isn't 'who is good', it's 'who is worst.' Maybe he was the worst, maybe not. But they've assigned him as the 'worst' so that's what it is.

Keith probably could have done that.  I'm not upset that they signed Torres.  It was a surprisingly good contract for the Tigers and he has offensive upside.  It was just odd because he doesn't seem like a great fit defensively.  He not a good fielder, not versatile, not even willing to move to change positions.  It seems to me like he was a good value, so they decided to jam him into the roster somehow.

He might be playing more games at DH next year than 2b.     It all depends on what they do with Torkelson.   Feels like they need some sort of every day (or close to it) spot for Tork or he should start at Toledo where he can see live pitching every day.

Outfield is fine, actually pretty good if Carp & Meadows continue development.  You can do a lot worse than Matt Vierling and Wenceel Perez as a backups.    But that infield, as of January 31st, is kind of hot garbage and strangely constructed.   They signed Ibanez and McKinstry and have Baez, Keith Tork and Sweeney and you add a minus defender for 2b.   It all feels very cobbled together.   I'll stick to my belief that unless Baez is a revelation in Spring Training that he shouldn't be on the team.  Sweeney had some moments but is very unproven.   Kreidler has shown next to nothing  in his limited time at the plate and always seems to be injured.  Jace Jung is a total mystery, but is more 2b than 3b.   Bregman would be the only solid proven guy if he signed but that's not happening.   It's just messy.   I feel like they HAVE to make a trade or two to make sense of it all.   Kreidler and Baez on the roster seems senseless.

I don't like this hurry up and wait for Rainer and McGonigle (and Jung and Lee too).    They just made the playoffs, strike while the iron is hot.  Rainer and McGonnigle  (the next Tram & Lou) are 2 or 3 years away.

(and then, I have this awful feeling that the 2027 season doesn't happen at all).

Or put the other way, it all depends on what Torkelson has done with Torkelson. If he can add to the performance level he found after his return, he'll force his way into the lineup, if not, he won't or he won't be in Detroit. It's a no mercy business, that is unless they already owe you $25M or more. :classic_sleep:

Not to worry. I’ve been assured that free agents don’t care where they played as long as they get paid.

Is that the question, though? I would submit that Maeda—the guy people seem to want to cut to be able claim logical superiority against the sunk cost fallacy—has a higher likelihood of providing positive value in 2025 relative to Faedo. Having extra years of Faedo that become increasingly more expensive is not a positive.

That said, Faedo is also the worst. So it’s a win-win in this case.

I think his desire to stay home with the only organization he’s played with isn’t a slight towards Detroit (or Boston, Toronto, etc.). He might also be aware of the challenges he has had hitting in Comerica during his career.
