Is that the question, though? I would submit that Maeda—the guy people seem to want to cut to be able claim logical superiority against the sunk cost fallacy—has a higher likelihood of providing positive value in 2025 relative to Faedo. Having extra years of Faedo that become increasingly more expensive is not a positive.

That said, Faedo is also the worst. So it’s a win-win in this case.

clearly opinions on Maeda can vary. I think he's toast - but we will get to see for ourselves because there is little question they are going to start the season with him. I won't be heartbroken if he pitches well, but surprised.

I think his desire to stay home with the only organization he’s played with isn’t a slight towards Detroit (or Boston, Toronto, etc.). He might also be aware of the challenges he has had hitting in Comerica during his career.

There's also the possibility that Jim Bowden is speculating and doesn't have any special insight into any of it.

Remember, just a month or two ago, Ken Rosenthal assured us that that the Tigers would never spend for someone like Bregman... now the story is that they have the best deal.

Guys, Faedo isn’t good. Scott is being nice.

Tigers fans have been conditioned to such sub-major league talent in the organization for so long that even the better ones among them seem quite acceptable, even though it’s unlikely they’ll end up anywhere else but Asia or Mexico once they go. Grid willing, we won’t be thinking that way a few years from now.

I didn’t hear Bowden say in that segment that Bregman wanted to stay “home”, but I do think you’re right that he does, and he’d take less money to do so. Although, as for Boston, Bregman definitely would go there because he has already said he would play out of position for the chance to do it. But I do think you’re right that Bregman’s #1 preference is stay in Houston, and we’re talking him making enough money that he might take $10MM or even $20MM less overall to do it.

As for Bowden, what does he base his idea on, that the Tigers have the best offer out there for Bregman, other than “he thinks” “perhaps”? That would mean Harris has put an offer on the table for Bregman that’s better than 6/156, and given the current state of our organzation and the guy leading them, that makes no sense to me. Even if he’s right on this one, Bowden has never impressed me with insights or inside dope.

I will say this for Bowden, though: his idea trading an OF for Paredes is kind of an intriguing idea, since he’s is a free agent in three years, although he’s probably not the defender we need there and may even play himself out of the position, and I don’t know what major league-ready OF we could give them that the Astros would want, outside of Riley or Parker, which definitely ain’t happening.

As I speculated in a post a few days ago Carpenter for Paredas

Yeah, that’s what I believe Harris is thinking as well.

They don't really have anyone whose best position is third base.  They have players who can play third base, but they are more valuable for their versatility than their ability to play third base.

I don't remember Paredes having anything like a great arm at 3b but he has graded out there average to plus so far. Vierling's has graded a little below average thought he might improve some if he played there more regularly. McKinstry's Rrds has been up and down, good in '23 bad in '24 - sample sizes for both guys not really big enough but neither appears to project to be someone you want there every day.

Agree that's a hard trade to make and therefore plausible IMO. We need righty power and have an abundance of Lefty hitting. It balances us out. On the other hand carpenter is suited for Comerica and  Issac not so much. Both players defend "ok" and Issac costs more and has one less year of service. BUT third baseman are much harder to find than right fielders.

They have players who can play 3b as well as Parades.

I was referring to Bregman.  I am lukewarn on Paredes and see a Carpenter for Paredes trade as a sideways move.

Personally I don’t like that at all.  1 yr of Paredes who isn’t a good defender and whose offense will likely be hurt by Comerica for 3-4 years of Carpenter who is our best hitter (and was top 3 in AL) against right handed pitching and still improving.

Although Carpenter is another guy that needs to stay on field more successfully.

I can’t ever fault an athlete for that. No one tries to get hurt and injuries often come from hustle or bad luck.

Time to move on.  Now that Bregman is apparently signing an 8 year 240 million dollar deal with the fictional New York Knights, it's time to....

Keep Carp.

Sign Jack

Stick with Vierling/Jung at 3b.

We already have bad defense a 2nd base.   Totally unproven or below average at 1b with Keith, Malloy and Tork and not good (but not bad) defense at SS, we need something better than Paredes at 3rd.  E-Sock is destined to be a DH before he's 30.  Plus those 19-22 home runs are more like 16-20 playing 81 at Comerica.  Vierling hit 16 last year and he's a better defender at 3rd than E-Sock.

I agree. Carpenter should be off the table as an option. Either sign Bregman or use Jung and Vierling at 3rd base.

Agreed. Yet, 'IF' the Stros sign Bregman, we could still deal for Parades. It does not have to be a LH OF, maybe a prospect or two from pitching depth (or lower minor position players/Ps). Then Houston could turn around and sign someone like Verdugo to be a LH OF (they had been rumored to have contact with him earlier this off season). Then all the while adding some prospect depth (from Detroit) to their depleted system.

Just ideas... Parades, though not a great glove, could still help at 3B, put Vierling in the OF. Also, Parades is still quite young as well.

These days, it doesn't matter how young a player is. It only matters how long he's under team control.

You can't fault them, but that doesn't mean you don't take it into account in evaluating what a player is likely to provide. Bad luck is bad luck, but I'm not necessarily so sanguine about 'hustle' injuries. If they happen because a guy plays out of control, to me that may be a red flag. Riley has been close to being there.

It will be interesting next October when we breakdown the combined numbers of our third basemen (Vierling, Jung, Ibanez, McKinstry, Navigato, Bohm) to how Bregman fares with the New York Knights.    I mean, left field in Knights Field is similar to Comerica and he's not putting up Roy Hobbs type numbers as a right handed hitter. .   Any other stadium and Hobbs hits 23 or 24 home runs.   Right Field at Knight Field is a joke.   Bump Bailey Corner is practically Little League dimensions.   Hobbs was so overrated.

I'm a little mystified with the Carpenter platoon. How can such a successful hitter against RH pitchers be so terrible against lefties?  Is this a bit self-fulfilling?  Has Hinch's match-ups stymied his development?
