But if Vierling is a $3 million a year guy, Bregman is not a $40 million a year guy. He's not that much better. Not even close. There was room for both and the salary comparison is apples and oranges given where they are at in their careers It's done though. I wish it wasn't the Red Sox who got him. I hate seeing them get someone the Tigers wanted. Quote
Tiger337 Posted February 13 Posted February 13 Barring a trade, I don't think they'll have a regular third baseman. Vierling might get a lot at bats there, but I think there will be a lot juggling. Quote

The bottom line is, there’s no way he was ever coming to Detroit. The ballpark is death to right handed power hitters. It would’ve hurt his stats to come here, and if there’s one thing Alex Bregman is concerned about more than anything else, it’s his stats. Because there is no way that the Red Sox are in a dramatically better position—or in any better position at all—to make the playoffs than the Tigers are. So if it’s really about winning, he just went to the worse bet. Quote

He has to make the team first. Is he better than Holton, Brieske, Foley, Vest, Kahnlee. Hurter, Guenther, Hanifee? Maybe, but those guys were pretty good last year. He does add some depth though which is crucial today. 1 Quote

I really doubt we offered him 6 years—I suspect our offer was similar to the Red Sox. I believe they did offer him that. Otherwise, they wouldn't have been taken seriously. There was no way he was going to sign a short-term deal with the Tigers. It seems like he wants the chance to put up big numbers this year with the Red Sox and then go for a big 6-7 year deal nextyear. If not, then he still gets a damn good three-year deal. Quote

IdahoBert Posted February 13 Posted February 13 I wish I hadn’t got caught up in this mania. Against my better judgment I fecklessly began to believe this could work and I’m disappointed in how I departed from my original instincts, which was to see this player and possibility as an unlikely fit. I feel a level of ill will towards the player and the process that makes me uncomfortable. Quote
Tigermojo Posted February 13 Posted February 13 At least he didn't go to an AL Central team. Maybe he'll suck or someone will establish themselves at third otherwise we're going through this again next year. 1 Quote

That's crazy....if that's the new going price for signing established players, i see going with youth (controlled cost players.) That's crazy money.. Quote

Klondike Posted February 13 Posted February 13 (edited) They have to concentrate on getting pitchers here. Sluggers will rarely want to hit in Comerica unless its godly money. Sign Skubal Edited February 13 by Klondike Quote

I think/wonder if Boras and Bregman chose them to drive up the AAV as much as possible to have Boston beat Detroit's offer. Or, Bregman's family wants to be in Boston. Who knows. He's back on the market in November if we wanted to try kicking that football again. Quote
romad1 Posted February 13 Posted February 13 So, do they go and get a RH bat still on the market? Or, is Tork trade coming? Quote

Assuming that the 6-170+ offer the Tigers made is real (I believe it), I think the Cubs are the team they used to drive up Boston's number IMO... Basically Bregman had one long term offer he would consider and a couple of teams interested in the shorter term play, and he used one to drive up the price for the other. I'm glad it's over.... I would like to think this should put to rest any of the "ownership won't spend" hot takes, but that's probably optimistic lol Edited February 13 by mtutiger 1 Quote

Tigermojo Posted February 13 Posted February 13 Some of Bregman's money is deferred so the $40 million could be misleading. Boston might be the only team offering an opt out after the first season. From what I read, Detroit and Chicago offered opt outs after two years. Quote
