I will say on Arenado, the Rockies are covering a good chunk of his contract, and there are some deferals in there. The contract isn't too prohibitive, but the CBT number would balloon in 2027 (first year of Skubal under a free agent contract) due to the fact that the Rockies aren't covering any of that contract.

This article seems intended to simply throw red meat to the unwashed huddled masses, yearning for spectacles.

I like red meat in moderation (gout), did not shower today (I did wash) and long for spectacles because my glasses frame has a stripped screw. But I'm not going to read the article based on your input. Danka

I'm good with Ibanez and Jung at 3B..prefer that to giving up assets forca declining player like Arenado.

Re Tork..on the one hand., I can understand his attitude about wanting to get the noise out of his head about his swing and return to the simpler approach that worked well in college.

OTOH..this ain't college and the team has resources that can help improve your results so buck up and take advantage of the help.

I'm so conflicted

I don't think wanting to go back to what worked in College captures what he said. He said he's trying to become more athletic at the plate which can only mean strength and flexibility to cover more of the zone. IF he does it, he will be leaving his old approach (mostly look for center cut pitches to drive) behind. But it's a very hard thing to do. For every guy like JD who finds greater success with a new approach, there are probably as many or more who learn the hard way that their long years of work has already converged them to the optimum solution for their capabilities and there is no upside in changing the approach.

Arenado I think is due 27M (32 - 5 from Colo) for 2025

22 (27-5 from Colo) for 2026

and 15 for 2027

so that's 64M for 3 years, or 21.3M per season

even if STL picked up 19M, you still are paying him 15M per season, for a great glove and a RH bat that has played like a LH bat for 2 years probably because his bat is slowing down and he has to cheat/pull the ball

pass

Correct on the contract. Note 6M from each year is deferred way into the future. If acquired now:

Why would we want Arenado for 3 seasons?  I like what Scotty had to day today regarding Bregman:

Didn’t Hinch say an off-season or two ago something to the effect of “we’re building a good program in Detroit, so if you (free agents) want to win, come join us, and if not, we’ll beat you”?

So, Full 25 man.

What are we looking at here

C - Rogers, Dingler,

INF - Baez, Ibanez, Jung,  Keith, McKinstry, Sweeney, Torres

OF - Carpenter, Greene, Meadows, Perez, Vierling

SP -  Flaherty, MIze, Montero, Olson, Skubal,

RP - Brebbia, Brieske, Foley, Holton, Hurter, Kahnle, Maeda, Vest

Maybe they'll go sign Jose Quintana for a year.   I feel like starting pitching is still thin, even with Jobe waiting until it gets warm (I doubt he throws less than 40 innings by mid May).     Maybe they got with 4 starters and use an Opener one time through the rotation.

Very interested to see what Mize does this year.   I don't think any of us should give up on that guy.  It seems like it's all in place for him to finally show why he was a 1/1.

So could we accept the salary for 2025 and 226 and St. Louis eats 2027 thus saving 24.7 and having our payroll clean for Skuball ?

That’s some good dancing around Tork’s comments by A.J. Astaire. 😁

I suppose it’s possible that what Tork meant by “I don’t watch video” was actually “I do watch video but I get in my own head about it and it sometimes messes me up”. But I think it’s at least as likely that he meant what he said, and management got to him and said, you cannot say this kind of thing, especially if you want us to find a spot for you on our bench in Detroit versus riding the bus in Toledo, or at least get another team interested in you so you can get a fresh start starting someplace else, which I would bet both parties would prefer at this point. Because I don’t think the org wants to torpedo Tork’s career or anything like that. Far from it, I believe. He’s been around for years, they know him, they’ve invested time and treasure in him, and I think they’d like him to succeed somewhere, if not here. Preferably in the National League, I would assume.

Either way, there’s no way the Tigers could let Tork just lip off about how he prefers to avoid video—and by implication, analytics in general—and let his comments just sit out there for the other, especially younger, guys themselves to ruminate on. The org had to get out in front of the comments and control the narrative on that, so they could keep all their players’ hearts and minds dedicated to the program versus questioning its value.

Could you provide a link?

EDIT Never mind, I think I found it

Sorry you caught me while using my device which didn't have the login to the freep on it.  Remembering that login was beyond my capacity.

Agree.  One other thing about Tork.  He's supposedly the man who came up with the hockey stick and pizza pizza home run celebrations which i think were intended to curry favor with the Illitches but also seem to me to be slightly subversive.  If the team comes up with a HR celebration that involves casino gambling (not hard to imagine a roulette wheel or dice throwing) or even more subversive -- something that depicts surface parking (backing a car up into a spot?) you'll have to wonder if he's a natural Spartacus.

Maybe people have gotten conditioned by football. Everyone on a football team uses film to learn what the opposing team does tactically, but baseball isn't football. In baseball taking and watching video is what you pay coaches and your bio-med people to do. If they see something that can help a hitter they take it to him. There is no value in *requiring* your players to become kinesiologists - adding non-performance based requirements to your player selection criteria just reduces the pool of good players you give yourself access to and I'm sure AJ and Scott Harris know that well.

I’m talking more about taking a few random interview quotes and then building an elaborate fantasy universe filled with projected motivations and then acting as if pure assumptions are fact.

I know, it’s the internet.

Bottom line is that Tork will either hit or he won't, and if he hits no-one will care how he got there and if he doesn't he'll join the ranks of the barely remembered Brennan Boesches of the world.
