So it was his back or hip that made him swing at pitches a foot and a half outside of the strike zone?

Somebody here posted a theory that the back/hip and age had reduced his bat speed and to compensate for it he began to swing earlier.  Seems rational enough, but who knows if that's exactly what it was.

I think all those things are factors, but I think maybe the biggest is that when he was with the Cubs and Mets, he was one of many good players (and he was good),  but he never had to carry a team.  He comes here and he is THE MAN when he does - he is no longer one of many, he is the leader and I think his mentality changed.  I don't think he was suited for that role.  With the other teams - he wasn't necessarily the focus of the opponents, but with the Tigers he was and they did a better job of exploiting it.    All we needed out of him was to play to career averages and wow, significant drop in 2022 and then off a cliff the last two years.     It didn't work.  Tigers need to accept that, regardless of money.   You can go with a platoon of Sweeney/Navigato/Leonard and get more.    Navigato is Italian for Navigated.....let him point the way !!!!

Aging = Slowing Bat Speed.    He has started his decline now.

Yes, I was just noting his propensity to chase is nothing new and not caused by his physical issues, he’s always done that. It’s his inability to drive balls that he can reach that is the problem, and that may be related to his injury.

When are they going to give Steven Moya another chance.  He's only 33 !!!   What about Travis Chapman and Shannon Penn ?  Nobody even mentions Kyle Sleeth for the rotation anymore.

Why sign an expensive infielder when Cale Iorg is right there?

I don't know what to make of Navigato.  I suspect he's a 4A IF, but I don't know.  If they keep him and give him a shot at the roster, that's fine.

I liked the acquisition of Leonard.  He had injury and struggled a bit upon return last season.  I expect him to be added to the 40 but I'm not sure he has a spot on the 26 quite yet.

I still like the idea of acquiring Kim (like his combination of offense and defense even if his power might be limited), allowing him his recovery early in the season, and using that time to determine what to do with Baez.  Now, whether that means a left side of the IF of Sweeney and Baez on a mostly everyday basis or not, I don't know, but I would be fine with it early on.  But I also think Kim is under the radar enough that a 2 year deal is reasonable for both sides.  It allows to use free agent / trade capital elsewhere.

I don't think they're going to sign any left-side infielder.     Maybe someone who can play first base, but it'll be someone that none of us care about.   Someone ranked low on the list.     Then reclamation project pitchers coming off injuries.   They're not doing anything bold.  They got to the playoffs last year, why spend now?

I'd say signing Kim is more smart than bold, but that's just my opinion

Leonard is already on the 40.

I like this too but with Tork in the fold and Walker requiring the Tigers to sacrifice a draft pick (or perhaps two?  I'm not sure) because of the QO, I have a hard time thinking it will happen.  I think they're more likely to bring in somebody who can play 1B on the type of contract that they can eat during the year if Tork finds himself

Agree with this. The team is not going to spend on a 1st Baseman. Not this year anyways.

Tork will get more chances... until he runs out of them, IMO.

The RH'ed bat to add is in the rest of the IF. Not 1B, not the OF.

That means Bregman, Torres, or Adames (let me add Kim into this because... yes), IMO. 3B and SS are easy places for a RH'ed bat (especially if they jettison Baez); and I believe Adames can also play 3B and 2B, as can Kim. Even Torres could work if they find out Keith can go back to 3B (all depends on his shoulder...); but as a secondary question, can Gleyber also play 3B?

There are variances in ability from the right side... but balance might be more important than lethality from the right side for this signing. But a plus RH'ed bat nonetheless.

I would have no problem with adding any of these guys, and I'll leave the dirty work and analysis up to Harris and his team to decide which one (certainly dependent on mutual interest...).

Also... I mentioned Sasaki as my #1 pitching addition target.

I would love to get him.

But if the Dodgers sign him... that would free up one of Flaherty or Buehler to sign...?

I would be fine with grabbing one of those guys too...

details like what team they play for? 😉

Buehler has a pretty good chance to come here.

Juan Soto will play for the Tigers only if he has no say in the matter.
