Or why not acquire both Kim and Suzuki and maybe Carpenter is moved for prospects? Trade Carpenter? No way, don't even consider it. Quote

They’re extremely reluctant to use him vs LHP. If the return is greater than Carpenter and/or addresses an area of weakness, why not trade him? Quote

Without proof he will still have a SS arm, you basically have to hedge on the possibility you are looking at adding a RH LF/DH. Tigers have taken on rehabs, but more like Flahery, where things were further along. His performance may have still had some way to go, but there was a pretty fair indication his was physically sound. OTOH, they dumped Boyd when he wasn't going to be ready to evaluate in ST. Quote

I’m not sure Carpenter is the kind of player to trade in the offseason, when trade partners can evaluate his defensive and platoon deficiencies in an in-depth, analytical manner and they have the luxury of time. He might be the kind of chip to trade if he has a hot July and the other team has a real need for a LHH OF who’s raking right-handed pitchers right now and will overpay to get him. RatkoVarda Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 if Soto gets 765-805MM at 26, then Riley (if he stays healthy) is looking at 300M+ at 28 Quote

I like Carpenter enough as a player, my bigger concern is that like Riely, he needs to stay on the field. Shoulder and back issues in successive years are not what you like to see in a player's CV. Even at 30, barring catastrophic injury, he'll likely get 350. With Mike Illitch they'd keep him. With Chris? Quote

The only question is bite the bullet and trade him while you can get a good return or take the performance and accept the comp pick as consolation. Edited December 9, 2024 by gehringer_2 Quote
RatkoVarda Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 just hoping Harris gets Austin Hays and Buddy Biancalana at this point! Quote

As long as the big markets can afford to outbid places like Det, they will. A contract like Soto's - or the one Skubal will get if he stays healthy - is suicide for a team like the Tigers. Ilitch can talk a good game about being willing, but the $ are not there in this market when push comes to shove and the league isn't going to allow teams to operate at a loss. Doesn't matter if the owner has the money - the team still has to be solvent. Edited December 9, 2024 by gehringer_2 1 Quote
Tigermojo Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 I prefer the money goes to developing future versions of Soto than overpaying free agents. Quote

In the end, you can only stay ahead with fewer $ if you have more brains, and eventually the dollars will take the brains away from you as well, so you need a management/scouting pipeline as well. Edman85 Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 Not gonna be a popular take, but I would want to fully understand the effect Riley Greene's injury history may have one his aging curve before going crazy on a long term extension. 4 Quote

I agree. The goal going into last season was to try to keep him healthy for the entire season. He mostly made it, I think he had one stint on the injury list? Quote

papalawrence Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 Given Skubal has Boras, perhaps Harris will consider trade offers this week. Would be a PR nightmare, but he'll probably never have higher value Quote
