Correct.

He has to be sold on the pitching development team, which is supposedly high on his list... and I'm not certain what else.

But sunshine, his idol and mentor Yu Darvish, and other factors are not on our side.

I'm not sure how many at bats he's even gotten against LH arms. It's starting to look like Harris won't trade any productive and under team control players. Just the opposite, he has signed players just to trade them for more prospects. As long as Carpenter keeps producing, even only as a lefty, he'll have a roster spot on the Tigers. Until....he gets too expensive.

How old is Rodriguez? 16, 17?  Tell him to hang tight for a season.  Get your driver’s license, meet a girl, go to the prom.

Can you imagine if we had signed Flaherty for 2 years? He would have been even more valuable. And I really trust Harris now...we may contend this season.

He wasn't terrible in 78 PA agasint LHP in '23, 657 OPS but a 333 OBP. Last season he did pretty much nothing in only 32 AB. Considering how bad our RH hitters were I'm not sure why Hinch didn't give him a little more run to see what he could do. It's definitely an issue, if you only always play to the short term platoon advantage with a given hitter, then it does pretty much become a self-fulfilling situation that he's not going to get any better at handling same side pitchers, and sooner or later he's going to have to face one when it matters or at the least you will have to make a substitution you don't want to.

I think they can contend if key players stay healthy. They were the best team in baseball when Greene, Carpenter and Meadows were all healthy and performing.

We are probably due for some regression in the starting pitching - but at least there is plenty of depth. But with so many young hitters there is room for the offense to pickup the slack if the kids start putting more balls in the seats as they get stronger.

What starting pitching?  We basically had two the last 45 days of the season.  Hopefully one of Mize or Manning hits.

Skubal, Olson, Cobb, Maeta and Mize. The Tigers starting rotation.

I'm putting it at 50/50 Maeda gets into the rotation at all. At 36 and relatively slight (for a pitcher), he'll probably try to train harder, rip something, and be done. Manning will probaby get some run if he's not traded, and Gipson-Long sometime before the end of the season unless he has a rehab set-back.

Jobe will be up at some point, if not from the start. Hamm likely starts at AA and he looks more and more like the real deal. Jobe and Hamm could both be in the mix by 2026. I think Harris is still thinking stop-gaps and I don't expect any long-term deals. Flaherty is going to get a 4/80-100 deal somewhere. From what I see Harris is thinking longer-term more than going all in now. I'm not opposed to that, although I would like to see them pony up for Skubal. He is just cut from a different mold. He has some Bob Gibson in him

He would tell you to f off, and his trainer would probably not do any business with you in the DR and tell all his friends.

And I doubt they have proms in the DR. This contract is their way off the island.

The Mets or dodgers tv contracts haven't changed in years. Give you a guess what has changed.

The big markets tv deals aren't the ones that are gonna price the Tigers of the market. Thier profit this year was second best. It's chris didn't spend. Not saying he had to go crazy but pumping skubal by even 30 million doesn't erase those profits and that doesn't include the bump in tickets and merchandise from seemingly fielding a better team with him on it.

 

We spent only 38 percent payroll to revenue so there is plenty of room for growth. We probably can't do 4 700 million guys. But one or two.skubals isn't a problem for teams of detroit's market size.

Good post. Agree on many points. Now find someone you think is a good bet to throw big money and long years at who will actually come here.

Jobe did not look ready at the end of last season, if he picks up where he left off, he's still got some work to do.
