I wonder if the White Sox had a choice between Mayer and Teel as the headliner and they chose Teel since they have Colson Montgomery? Considering how far away they likely are they wouldn't do that if they clearly had Mayer higher but if they felt they were essentially the same player Teel being a catcher vs. a SS may have been a deciding factor.

BoSox held on to Mayer

So to create a comparable package to what the Red Sox gave up, the Tigers would've traded McGonigle (top 25 overall guy similar to Teel), Rainer (2024 1st rounder, top 50 guy similar to Montgomery), Lee (non-top 100 but regarded MI similar to Meidroth), and Montalvo (non-top 100 P similar to Gonzalez.

I'm guessing the majority would not be onboard with giving up that package. If it was Jung instead of McGonigle, I think I would have considered it.

And Walker costs us our Competitive Balance pick which is the 2nd competitive balance pick and I believe will be pick #31 based on what Edman said with the Mets, Yankees and Dodgers dropping 10 spots and the 2 picks for players winning awards.

Walker costs us our second rounder. Our third pick. Even if it was our second pick, the competitive balance pick cannot be forfeited unless it is acquired via trade.

Thank you for the correction.  That’s is considerably better especially drafting in the position we do.

Crochet was one of the best pitchers in the game before they started limiting his innings  He is also young and has two years before free agency, so I would expect him to cost a lot in terms of prospects.  It makes sense for the Red Sox who are all in right now.  It makes less sense for the Tigers since I think they are looking longer term.

Fits does not make a great free agent class.

Walker, a 2.6 WAR player last year and total of 15 over 10 years. Never an all-star. Heaney was an under 1 war player, who has been 8.6 war player over 11 years.

My point was on illitch and spending. WHile these are decent 'fits' its silly to get mad on whether illitch spends or not based on these players. If Walker gets 200 million thats gonna be a terrible contract. I'd rather us not sign that deal just so Chris can prove he spends. It's a crap free agent class with little other than fill in guys.

I don't think anyone is suggesting we spend just to spend.

If you're disappointed in free agent classes that are not great, then you must be disappointed just about every offseason. The strawman of Christian Walker at 200 Ms is just laughably unserious on its face.

Otherwise, good post. 😉😂

Well, the Winter Meetings are over tomorrow and it looks like Team Harris will accomplish their #1 goal:

Not making any mistakes.

Congrats to all and we are off to Applebee's* to celebrate!

(*please don't forget that the per diem is $49/day.)

Spencer and Jace approve (so far).

So the Boston front office is against Bregman, Cashman has been calling Houston cheaters and NY insiders say no way on Bregman That leaves Houston who wants five years and Toronto.

Would we then have a window at 7 years 189 and if so should we ?

Committing 7 years to a guy who is already showing some decline seems like a mistake.  I would trust Harris and Co. more with this type of decision, though, than the previous regime.

Yesterday's Free Press said Tork had to earn a spot during spring training. Today's said the same thing about Jobe. Has to earn it during ST. So, maybe spring stats DO matter?

Won't make the opening day starting rotation or won't make the roster?  As other have mentioned, there is a good chance he'll begin the season as a reliever and then work his way into the rotation.

Who said that? Harris and Hinch said he will strictly be used as a SP. It even said that in today's article.

Nobody said it.  He was a reliever last year and they need to limit his innings this year and having him relieve for a period of time might be the best way to do that.

your original post quoting the Free Press article said:

"Scott Harris hasn't promised Jobe will be in the starting rotation as a member of the 2025 opening day roster".

That could mean that he'll be on the roster, but not in the rotation.

My original point was ST actually matters, performance wise. And the Tigers sound pretty sure he will only be a SP this season. My opinion is he'll be up early in the season after starting in Toledo but if he pitches lights out in ST, he'll make the roster. As a SP.

This probably true for most of the team. This is a team made up of a lot of guys with short track records. Beside Riley, Jake and maybe Vierling  I'm not sure anyone is enough of a lock to survive a really terrible ST. But as Hinch is always quick to point out, what they are looking for isn't necessarily reflected in the stat sheet.
